New non-rover project: Zodiac FC-470.

I recently picked up a used Zodiac FC-470 from a Naval Base in San Diego. For those who are not familiar this is the 15.5" Zodiac that seats 10 and is commonly used by Navy Seals. It needs a little bit of work but is in overall great shape. I plan to service the valves and rebuild the transom in the short term. Best part is, I know nothing about boats!

What you will probably find is that the outer rubber skin has begun to deteriorate. There are special hypalon paints made for refinishing old inflatables. Same for the adhesive for reattaching the transom. I would certainly want to paint it a lighter color unless you enjoy touching a blistering hot boat.
Also, these are soft bottom boats so you'll probably want to ditch the slat floor in favor of a full plywood floor (you'll have to make it yourself) That will help with overall stiffness.
Jamestown Distributors has all you need at good prices.

Fill it with ice and use it for beer cooler?

I've been making a trip up to the San Juan Islands for a couple of years now. Crossing to uninhibited islands in a kayak to do some camping. I'm planning on doing the same thing with this once restored but with a larger group of people.

Let's go ahead and take "watching great white shark breaching" off that list and work from what you have left.

Thanks Bill! Definitely sounds like you know what you're talking about. Navy background?

It's a 1999 and the Hypalon is in remarkably good condition. The skin is not deteriorating and I plan to clean it good and put some 303 on it.

There are some de lamination issues here and there which should be easy to fix. I found a new thrust plate for the transom on eBay and other than that I was just going to sand and repaint the transom. There is a slight leak in the bow compartment and I suspect its a matter of rebuilding the inflation valves which will not be cheap.

It came with the foldable aluminum slat floor which seems to work well. In the spirit of restoring it to all genuine parts I'd like to get hold of the solid aluminum floors made for this boat which appears to be unobtanium. Plywood does seem like a good option though. Perhaps sealed with anti-slip paint?

Used parts are non existent and new parts through the dealer are obscenely expensive. The military foot pump for the boat was $300.

I hear you on the black color but the Pacific NW generally doesn't get too hot and like I said I'd like to keep it original if I can.

I'm going to check our that Hypalon paint as there are some areas where it has rubbed the fabric bare. The D-rings where all originally coated black and they appear to be stainless steel. Any idea what I could use to re-coat them?

I'm hoping to see some Orcas up in the San Juans. I saw plenty of seals, sea porpoises and sea otters last time I went.

Maiden voyage successfully completed. Spent the last week camping and touring the San Juan Islands. The boat is fantastic and a speed demon when planing. Just need a bigger (and newer) engine now.

So I got my hands on a rare military aluminum floor for the Zodiac at a fraction of the $4K that it costs new. Needs a little TLC then off to anodization.
