Need Land Rover communtiy help

I'm going to be brief with the overall description of the problem as
I would he all evening trying to type out all the issues. I will gladly explain the entire story to anyone that wants to hear it over the phone.

My wife is a teacher and she does home bound teaching as a side job to disabled children who can't attend public school. We have become friends with the family of a child she has been teaching for years and have been trying to help them make it. They have 4 children with the youngest being terminally ill with a genetic disorder. He has already had a Make a Wish trip to Disney World and the doctors have declared him a failure to thrive so time is short. His oldest brother is severly autistic and is unable to do anything on his own. The middle two children have no medical issues, but are suffering mentally. The sister got a full college scholarship and is risking blowing that by acting out now that she is out of the house and free not having to care for her siblings. The mother has cancer and cannot work, much less keep up with all the kids. The father works for the Town of Vienna Public Works in NOVA. He drives on hour and 45 minutes one way everyday to work because the pay is much more up there than in Louisa where they live. He has recently been demoted and lost pay because he has to take off so much for his wife's and son's appointments and he long since ran out of sick time. The only bill they are current on is the mortgage and have a hardtime keeping up with grocery bills. Even with disability payments, medicare, and other donations they have a hard time getting by. To make things even harder on them their only dependable transportation, a dodge minivan, just blew the head gasket and they can't afford the $2,800 to fix it. Their other vehicle is a mid 90's pathfinder that is in less than great shape and I don't know how the father drags it to and from NOVA everyday. So what i'm asking is if anyone in the Virginia or maybe Maryland area has a vehicle they want to donate to this family. Doesn't have to be a rover, but maybe something that gets good gas mileage and is relativly dependable. I'm thinking that someone out there must have a $1000 car they could part with knowing it was going to help someone out. I just spent 40 minutes on the phone with the father and he doesn't know what to do. They don't have the money to do anything and my wife and I have already helped all we can with other stuff. I haven't even touched on all the bad luck they have seen in the past few years, but if you want to help and want to hear more PM me your number and i'll give you a call.

Sounds like cash may help and go further than another $1000 clunker? Is there a way to set up a Paypal account in their name, etc so that people could easily donate? Have you or anyone else got the local media involved? This would be an easy way for those who wish to help to verify the story, etc.

My 2 cents.

The media was involved and my wife even did a bit on the local NBC channel about it. I'll see if I can locate it and i'll check about how to donate. My wife says there used to be a paypal account, but is unsure if it is still up and running.

------ Follow up post added December 22nd, 2010 06:58 PM ------

here is what my wife did alittle while back. The car got patched up, but they didn't make it to hershey park. The dealership gave them a walmart gift card instead so they could buy groceries and household items.

Trevor,

That is a a sad story.

I do not have a POS to donate, but I think Rob is in the right path.

A little story like that , on my Gun Forum a little girl needed help, a local Gun Shop is putting up a G19 or $ 500.00 to the lucky winner. I've bought 10 tickets ( only 500 tickets to be sold ) , and stated " If I win, I will give the chance to re-raffle the G19 or give the little girls' fund the $ 500.00 ( I am sure if it goes to raffle again, I will purchase tickets again... and so forth )

Maybe something like that could be organized quickly?

I am in with $ 100.00 towards the purchase of the new car or repair of existing, whatever it takes?

Let me know how to handle it

Gustavo

Gustavo, that's a great idea with the raffle. I was thinking about putting this info on AR15 in the hometown forum as well and see what happens. My wife is setting up a paypal account for him right now and I will post up that info soon.

Trevor thats a very sad story but they are lucky to have people like you and your wife supporting them.

You may want to consider a facebook page. About a year ago my brother inlaw died suddenly at 47 leaving a wife and 5 kids with $400 in the bank. We supported the widow and the kids for most of this year and then in August she was hit and killed by a car along with my nine year old niece leaving the remaining 4 kids orphaned. A paypal button on the facebook page was a real life saver so we could help secure the kids future and work out the probate, adoption etc etc. Let me know if you need help setting it up.

Here is a link so you can see what it looks like. paypal sent

Well just got up and there is $1,370 in the account. There are donations from people in the UK so I don't know which forum they are off of. This is amazing! We sent all the login info to Nicholas' mother last night, but they have that high speed internet that comes through the phone line rather than cable TV and its's down so she has no idea how much is there. The last thing I told her was $400 so she is going to be blown away when she is able to get into the account.

$1868.50 in the account! Nicholas was admitted to the UVA hospital this afternoon and my wife and I are getting ready to leave to see him. A gun raffle should kick off tonight to raise additional funds. Details to follow.
