NAS 110 VINs do not match

Over the years we have found a number of NAS 110s where the # on the back doesn't match up with the VIN and such.
Today we found something even more "British". NAS 110 chassis VINs that do not match the dash or T support VINs. We wanted to put this information out there (maybe is it old news).
These are stock NAS 110s that have had no chassis changes. We can only assume that this has something to do with them being built by SVO.
Once we saw the first one we went around the lot and found others.
The chassis VINs start and end the same as the dash and T support decal VIN, but the middle is different.
Example:
SALDH1286PA918030 (appears on the dash and door opening)
SALLDHMM8KA918030 (appears on the chassis)

I feel like the Benny Hill theme song must play in a constant loop at the Rover factory based on this and other things I've found in Defender.

Oh my goodness! Now homeland security is going to deport ALL NAS 110s! Just kidding.

I'll bet that would get some people with a few dollars to spend calling their congressman or senator.

It looks like the VIN SALDH1286PA918030 that appears on the dash and the t-post is the NAS version of the VIN, and that SALLDHMM8KA918030 which appears on the chassis is the "other" markets version.

SALLDHMM8KA918030

United Kingdom
British Leyland/Land Rover
Defender
110" & 147"
5 door Station Wagon & 7 Door SW
3.9 liter V8 (injection)
LHD, 5 speed

Solihull
918030

Another NAS 110 that is on the lot today:

Dash and T support:
SALDH1281PA918274

Chassis:
SALLDHMM8KA918274

Out of the 4 we checked, 2 had this type of chassis #. The other 2 chassis had the "normal" VIN stamped in.

The sequence #s match, so they are obviously the same vehicle, just more Rover foolishness.

The white decal is in the driver's door opening, just below the striker for the driver's door.

Looks like they stamped the chassis for home market use and put it underneath a 1993 NAS 110 build up.

I had a friend who worked for DRA in UK for 30 years.
They used Land Rovers for work tasks.
DRA had a small maintenance shop that NEVER did any chassis replacements.
When they released a 1983 110, the number on the frame and Brake Petal were completely different.
My friend naturally thought that 2 of the vehicles had the brake petal assemblies off at the same time and were switched, so they investigated the non-matching chassis number thinking it would match a different DRA vehicle.
IT DID NOT.
The vehicle left the factory with 2 different numbers on the brake petal and the chassis.
The odd thing was the last sequence of numbers were off by more than 100.
The only conclusion was that the factory had the numbers wrong during assembly which I was told was a common problem that no one in UK seemed to care much about.
The vehicle was released from DRA and sold in UK in it's "untampered factory state".
Whereabouts are now unknown.
That 110 would probably not be allowed in USA.

Ohhhh.. Shit yeah, that could have far reaching ramifications to further wills cause... If land rover admits this happens then the whole case of non matching numbers would go out the window... Go get em Will..

I only checked a few this morning. I'll check the others we have here as soon as I can and let you know. We never really looked at chassis #s before, but a potential customer asked for a picture of one (valid request) and I was amazed at what I found. Even more amazed when we looked at the NAS 110 next to that one.
Goofy Brits.

Both the 110s we checked had low NAS #s, so maybe that has something to do with it. #417 is in the shop and that is "normal", but #61 and #84 both have the mis-match.

Nope, at the office. I know the chassis and the tag on the dash match but never looked on the door.
