Nantucket - September

I'll be in Nantucket the first week in September. Hit me up if you want to go for a bike ride (and have an extra bike), grab a drink, golf, lend me your 110 / jetski / boat, Segway, etc. or have advice on places to eat/drink/dive/swim, etc. We have a house around Cliff Road and Chester Street. Let me know if you'll be around that week, as I'll likely run out of things to do.

I'll be out at a wedding in Chicago and flying basically straight out to Nantucket, so I doubt I'll have a bike with me unless I can convince one of my friends to bring one of mine with him. He'll have his LR3 with him, so I shouldn't be Roverless for the whole week.

I know there are Defender owners who live up there year round or have homes on the island, a few of whom are board members, so let me know if you'll be around!

I'll be up in Nan at the end of the month for a birthday party for a long weekend - too bad we didn't overlap Josh. It should be very nice up there in September for you.

Question to people that are familiar with the island: What are some good places to rent a vehicle. From my limited search it seems Jeeps are expensive and hard to come by, any other suggestions or is the public transport/taxis fine?

I was just up there for the fourth and will be back in September, sorry I don't ride bikes. I'll bet you could rent this 110 for cheap.

Without, my D90 will not see Nantucket, my father would keep it for himself. I am amazed at how many defenders are up there every year. Not many that look like mine. I think the NHC would not let mine on island because of the dents and paint job.

The truck has an oversand permit, so you never know when someone might bury the thing. A shovel may just come in handy. I have one in my truck and it has saved me a couple times... but only in snow.

This is a good place to eat just around the corner. Not too fancy but good food, the booth by the bar is quite nice if you can't sit outside. Great staff and owners. Have fun, wish I was there now.

Hey Josh - sorry I missed this. We will be at the Century House for a few days: http://www.centuryhouse.com/

I gave up on trying to get a motor vehicle rental. Prices were high and my wife and I might have an easier time renting and riding bikes around will be more fun too.

Those 2 spots do not look far from where we are. I'll check them out when go into town. Thanks for the info.

Just got back from Nan. Lobster Rob - My wife and I hit up Ventuno Backyard one after for a drink and some appetizers. You were not kidding - Leah is a great bartender. The guy next to us compared her Martini pours to an infiniti pool, haha. Cool, mellow scene there even at 6 on a Friday afternoon - thanks for the recommendation. Would like to go back for dinner - the couple of apps we had were really good. Didn't get to Queequag but it looked neat.

Hit up the Galley one afternoon for a couple of drinks and then again for a dinner. Very nice. The cottages on the beach look like a great place to stay. Corazon Del Mar was really good: http://www.corazonnantucket.com/ And we went out to the Summer House for the party on our last night: http://www.thesummerhouse.com/ Beautiful place and the food and drink were good. Interesting scene at the bar when we were leaving.

Saw a TON of Defenders, many with an ECR sticker and very clean and done right. One blue 110 with galvy chasis had me drooling. Waldo Scott is spot on - more D's per capita than any other place I've been. Saw some other coold rigs too - classic Broncos, some Series, some RRC's including a 3 door RHD, some old Jeeps and Willy's and even a Jeepster Commando in someone's driveway. There was a IH Scout parked in the street when we went to Ventuno. Sorry no pics.

BTW, the best way to get around the island is by bike. Really convienent and the motorists are ultra friendly. We rode out to Madaket one day and the Surf Side area the next and the rides were quite nice. Getting into and out of town was very quick.

So I'll be up there next Sunday through the 11th. Hopefully Irene tracks waaaaay East. What are they telling you locals to be prepared for? Saw 10 foot surges expected for Martha's Vineyard.

Just landed in Nantucket. Our flight from LaGuardia had 3 people. Been here 5 minutes with no Defender Sightings. Disappointing.

If you frequent Nantucket, you probably already know that Labor Day weekend is when the Browards gather there. It's fun to stroll the docks and see how the other half lives. We used to go out there and spend a few days on a mooring, but we haven't done so in almost 20 years. Once we saw Soldier of Fortune heading out of the harbor, only to be ordered back to the dock and boarded by the Coast Guard. Lots of bikini-clad babes and guys with no necks sweating it out, while everybody in the harbor was gaping at the show. They finally let them go, so I guess they didn't find any contraband.
