My yearly rant about Virginia vehicle taxes.

Well evidently because the economy has gone down the value of my rover has gone up according to VA. It is currently worth 24,500k according to the Virginia Government. This of course does not take into account that it currently doesn't run and hasn't for about 6 months, or that it is rusting out at the rear crossmember, or that it has approximately 140k miles on it.

I was going to ask some of the locals about this. I received my Arlington County sticker and property tax bill yesterday, after registering my 90 here for the first time, and thought it must be a mistake. Nearly $800 based on the assessed value. That seems outrageuos.

$800/yr for tags?! Ouch. My 88 and 110 are each ~$48/yr in WA.

On the $24.5k, what do you pay in annual tax for your vehicle?

Yes. And mine was prorated. Nearly $800 for 8 months (registered in late April). Tax rate is 5% of the assessed value.

5% of the assessed value? So, if you keep it for 20 years, you have to pay for it twice?

Maine is no better. You need to pay annual excise tax on the MSRP of the vehicle when it was new! I remember when i first registered my LWB. I paid $2500 bucks for it and they wanted almost half that in taxes and fees to register it!

I guess owning an antique does have its advantages. $700+ a year for vehicle registration is way too much.

It would be nice if they would have a different tax for vehicles classed as "pleasure vehicles"...

Yah, my '97 was assessed at 25.5k, so I'm paying similar dough. Wonder what the Arlington D110's assessments are like nowadays.

Another reason NoVA sucks. Wish they would just go ahead and give it to Maryland.

What Jeff said. Its the county you choose to register it in. I pay next to nothing for the the three trucks I own registered to central Virginia. Its not a state thing-its a county thing.
