Moving to Scottsdale/Phoenix AZ

We are moving to the Scottsdale/Phoenix area this summer. I am driving the D110 down a week from today (June 12th) from Kansas City.
12th to Amarillo TX, 13th Flagstaff AZ, 14th Scottsdale AZ
Click Here---> Trip Route
Any advise from the AZ crowd would be appreciated.
I have another interview with a really neat investment firm on the 16th. If for some reason they do not offer me a job let me know if anyone needs an econ/finance guy. Really, I am open to just about anything...
I would love to meet up with the AZ Land Rover club at their next meeting.

long story, but we feel that AZ's values etc, etc, etc, are more inline with ours
plus no more ice, snow, salt, rain, tornadoes... it is Rover friendly
much more to do outside too

Move to Georgia instead... We need a few more rovers here, especially 110's. AZ is really boring, too much brown. GA has a lot of green and a few hills. :-)

Jon,

I lived there for 7 years, left a couple years ago for the east coast and now back on the west coast.... I loved it there. Hot in summer, but head to the mountains or learn to deal with it. Much easier than the Kansas winters....

I can fill you in on any questions you have, trails to run and anything else. Ping me if you need anything.

Mark

I am down with the brown if it means no more -30 wind-chill and no sunlight for weeks at a time.

Thanks! It was 98 degrees there when I was visiting recently, and that felt like 80 degrees in KC! I ran 3 miles everyday there when it was in the 90s, no problem!

Will do... thanks

Seems I am a little nervous about the drive. I hope I do not run into hail through OK and TX, seems like they have been having an interesting spring.

OK, so how many D90/D110 guys are in AZ? I saw one white D90, and a D110. I was thinking that there would be more.

There are a few about. I know of half a dozen 90s and at least 1 ROW 110. Don't know anybody with a NAS 110 but I am sure there are 1 or 2 about somewhere.

Have you already found a place?

Ian

No, that is why I am arriving a few weeks before my family to hopefully score a job and find a place. We may need a furnish house to rent for a while since our house here in KC is still on the market (hard to sell an empty house).

Good idea. Not sure what your budget is but Fountain Hills to the NE and Cave Creek to the North are good areas if you want to expand your search. Tempe to the South can be hit or miss depending on the area and commuting is more of a pain crossing the Salt River and 202 Freeway. Mesa to the SE is hit or miss again with similar commute problems. Hit or miss to the West as you move into North Phoenix as well but the commute is easier than to the South.

The Biltmore area north of Downtown Phoenix is a strong financial area as is Phoenix Downtown if you can't find what you want job wise in Scottsdale.

The center of Scottsdale and North Tempe around the University are great night life areas.

Best outdoors stuff close by is to the N and NE. Hiking, Off Roading, Climbing, Lakes, etc. Or Camelback just to the SW for Hiking and Running.

Just get a good realtor and you should be spoilt for choice right now.

Welcome to the Valley.

Ian

Jon,
I lived out there for about 4 years about 10 years ago. When I made the drive, I never went all the way to Flagstaff. Depending on where you are ending up, I thought it was faster to get off in Winslow and take the AZ 87. Also check with the local club out there. http://www.azlro.org/ You are going to love that black truck in the summer.

I've done that drive a dozen times. Not too bad, and downtown ABQ is a great half way point. Flagstaff is a cool town if you get a chance to stop. They have a hell of a rugby tourney in september.

We hiked Camelback. The guide book we had said it was a difficult trail (Echo). We got to the mountain and I looked at it and laughed as I threw the book in the back seat. Parked the car and started the hike. Well about halfway up... lets just say I was happily impressed.
We liked the Biltmore area, PV, and N. Scottsdale. She will be working downtown, so those areas make the most sense. I have to admit that the houses out there are about three times as much as here in KC. Not sure about the housing crises in AZ that is on the news every night. I think KC has been hit harder than most cities.

I plan on stopping in Amarillo the first night, then the next night Flagstaff. Not sure what to expect with the D110 black now. I think I will have the AC recharged/looked at this week.

So who works on the Defenders in AZ?

Not many places to take it I'm afraid. The only remainng Phx Dealership is in N. Scottsdale and will charge you typical dealer prices for questionable parts swapping service. There is a company called RoverTechs again in the NS area that was started by a couple of Ex-Factory Techs but their prices are climbing rapidly and they seem to be getting fussy about working on non RR/LR4 type stuff. After that there is a guy in Chandler in the east valley who is ex-factory but has a mixed reputation and that's about it that I know of. Tucson has a better selection and a better dealer but its a bit far to go for basic service stuff. Most of us work on our own and only take it somewhere for something we cant or don't have the time to do ourselves.

Yes I would strongly suggest you make sure the AC is in full working order before getting here. It was 110 today and it will get and probably stay well up into the teens before Summer lets go in another 3 or 4 months and it starts to cool off. Maybe consider the suggestion on the white roof as well. Or get a roof rack with a white floor for the summer, and tint the windows, and get some fabric seat covers, and, and.....
