Moving to Hawaii?

Guys,

I'm relocating to Oahu very soon for my company. I'm not sure I want to ship my Defender. I not mechanically inclined and I'm not sure about servicing it out there and also the rust issue concerns me. It's in excellent condition and low miles(27K). Are the any forum members who live in Oahu and can provide insight. I hate to sell it but I know I can always buy another one. On the flip side, what a cool rig to cruise around the island in.

If you take care of it, rust shouldn't be an issue. Just stay on top of prevention and try to garage it and it should be fine. No worse than living on a Florida coast for rust. Not saying Florida is good for it but if you take care of it you will survive. Also you have a nice truck. No guarantee you will ind another like it.

There have been plenty of defenders in hawaii over the years so I am sure maintenance will be fine and of course there is this board so when you need help post it up and horsey will respond right away with the link to discussion to help you.

I sold my Series III to a guy on Maui who had a collection of 10+ British cars. He said there were some good mechanics out there.

If it was pastel green with a tan soft top with a red jerry can on the rear, it was probably my old truck...

I actually drove by the LR Dealer in Honolulu last week. They had a red jeep parked in the lot for sale.

I am not saying anything but I am just saying (lol)...

You don't see many Defenders on Oahu, but I wouldn't worry about getting it worked on. There is a very strong "car culture"and plenty of great mechanics.
The rust issues aren't any worse than Florida (judging by the Defenders I get up here in the shop that are from Florida) and it seems much worse on the windward shore where things don't dry out as much.
I'd bring it out. I'm looking at shipping a Series rig out there for my "winter" car.

I've been look at buying a place out there too and wondered about bringing my 90 over there. I just got back fro Kauai last week and didn't see one defender on the island. I've seen a few on the big island and Oahu in the last few visits. With the exception of one they all looked well cared for (from a distance).

Chad,

There are more defender's than what you think in Hawaii. Have family in Hawaii which allows us to visit often (wife more than I) & every time I see a different 90 or 110. You should take your 90 with you. As for getting it serviced, you will not have any issues. You will most likely get better service than in the states. Rust issues? Just coat the hell out of it, you will be fine. If you do not take I'm sure you will regret.

I am in Kaneohe right now. Just saw a green soft top with a Marines sticker on it. It wasn't looking too healthy.

My 90 spent several years in Hawaii. No rust issues at all. Just wash it down often, and address issues, if any, as soon as you find them. Dont stick it in a garage unless its is has fresh air, heat/ac, humidity controls. Otherwise, it will sit in a stagnant, rust prone garage.

i love going out to Kauai--would be even better with a D90. What area did you stay in Clarence?

We stay in Hanalei on the beach. Coolest rides i have seen there are a europa circa 2000 g wagen (but with CA plates) and laird hamiltons flat black h1. a developer in kauai supposedly has an enzo but have yet to see a 90 on the island.

Kauai is our favorite. Been there over a dozen times and never seen a 90. We'll be there again in November (meeting my bud from NZ there). We always stay in Po'ipu.

I thought we might have a member or two who live in Oahu. I have been there a couple times and remember seeing a very nice black 110. It was for sale though. I am going to figure out where I may live then figure it out what I will do. My plan is try and keep it. it may just become my daily driver ! It took me years get her and it's an awesome rig! I just wish I knew how to work on the thing!

Sorry if this post is a little late in your decision process. I've got a 94 D90 that I purchased on Oahu (in Kailua) about 2 years ago. I've got it on the windward side and I will say that corrosion is definitely an issue out here. It's more or less like living on a boat, I've quickly learned that anything can rust. That being said, Oahu's a great place to have one and there is some great offroading up by Kaena Point. There's a few D90's and 110's on the island, I see them every now and again.

Do you have a mechanic you would recommend on Oahu?
