Moving Back To Alaska

It has been years in coming, but I am finally moving back to Alaska. I just returned from a 3.5 day 4100 mile drive up the ALCAN with my VW, now it is time for the Defender to make the journey. My initial plan was to tow a small trailer with the D90, but that foolish idea quickly went out the window when I started doing weight and volume calculations. The photos show the configuration.

Sounds smart. Hauling stuff from OH sounds more like work. Get there safe and save the wear and tear for Alaskan adventures. Don't forget to write and send pics of the new neighborhood.

Alaska. One of only seven states I have not been too yet.

On my bucket list.

I was finally cleared to enter Canada after my U-haul and Land Rover were thoroughly searched at the Portal, ND station. Apparently declaring an antique firearm (in my case 1861 Tower musket) that doesn't need to be declared raises suspicion. In their eyes if the is one there has to be more. In my case there wasn't, but it gave the eager agents a chance to crawl all through the U-haul, check out the Rover and play with a firearm they never get to see.

Where abouts in Alaska are you moving? I lived in Fairbanks for awhile and LOVED it. I still have dreams of moving back.

For now Anchorage. I built a log home in Palmer, but sold in 2005 when I moved.

The trip up the ALCAN was a success! There was only one incident that I quickly remedied with a slim jim that I borrowed from the ower of the Toad River Lodge in Northern BC. Here are a few photos fro the road.

The spiciest moment was coming down a mountain in a snow storm and having 2 bison in the middle of the road. I went right between them, but was so thankful there wasn't an incident as I would have lost!
