As far as I'm concerned, it's an identity and I maintain that it could be used in some kind of fraud. I think VIN tampering is a federal offense and a shop would put a lot more time into looking for my tag if a federal investigator was calling them. I still advocate the "going medieval" approach to resolving this problem.

Seriously? You'd think at least someone at CBP would listen, but maybe that would only get your Defender crushed...

Carful for what you wish for. This current act now and deny later administration will ban ANY VIN removal and make bulkhead replacements or brake booster removal a crime. I would bet a large amount of money that ULC lost it or tossed it on accident. I highly doubt anything sinister took place.

PS - To the boards closet liberal, passive/aggressive who got his nose out of joint for my last political statement:

I'm perfectly willing to be accused of thinking the worst, it relates to my occupation. I'd be willing to put money on this not being the only time this has happened and that something is afoot at the Circle K.

Make sure when you get it towed that they write the vin down on the paperwork...it's easily spotted inside the window...oh, wait...too soon.????

------ Follow up post added March 12th, 2015 08:05 PM ------

On a more serious note.... I was talking to a parking ticket cop a while back and he said..if they can't see the vin through the window they have the authority to impound the vehicle..they said this was because there are so many people who say...that wasn't my car, someone had stolen my number plate...so the vin is their only real way of attaching the car to the owner, and they have found that people intentionally leave ticket stubs etc obscuring the vin plate just so they can pull this scam..

I guess I better not drive the Series, or the 130, or Harley, or my '72 1800E anywhere then!

Kinda sounds like bullshit. I have heard a ticket could be thrown out for a license plate but when was the last time you saw a metermaid take down a VIN?

What happened to the electrical system?

Any diesel in NJ over 8 years is exempt from inspection. No inspection sticker to scan. They have to go manual and use the LP not the VIN

I wish I'd done that intentionally. The f'ing metered parking on our street requires the ticket from the station be placed in front of the steering wheel on the dash, and we had one slide straight down into the VIN window there on the Jetta. I'd tried sucking the ticket out of there with a vacuum, tried a flat head screw driver, a flat head screw driver with gum on the end, etc. SHIT WON'T COME OUT!!!

Sorry to hear that Michael. If it's worth anything, the truck does look great even on the back of a flatbed.

I just came across this thread and I've been reading through it. What a nightmare. I'm so sorry. So since some people have been able to get new VIN tags and stickers from LR hopefully you can too. What ULC have done is clearly sloppy and unacceptable. In my opinion, just that Rhino stuff on your bulkhead and not even over the sticker would devalue your truck. I would try to find someone (or a company or organization) that restores (cleans/preserves) antiques or ancient artifacts (etc) who could help you carefully clean that stuff off your VIN sticker. Someone has to know the proper chemicals, tools, and technique. Maybe your local historical society would have a lead.

Good news / Bad news on my vin plate. Just got back from the dealer, and they seemed to have changed their tune and are ordering me a new vin plate. 6-8 weeks, and they seemed to have all the documentation they'll need. (Pending inspection of the frame vin stamp.)

The bad news, they were less hopeful about ordering a new DOT sticker.

Yeah I doubt they'll be able to get the sticker, but that's good on the VIN plate.
