If the stickers are in the footwell and the chassis is stamped I would think Land Rover would replace it.

I doubt your VIN is just going to appear on another vehicle. You have a title and registration.

Putting your VIN on another car isn't going to suddenly make it registerable.

That is completely unacceptable that they lost your vin plate, even worse to me is they didn't make it right.

I'm done dealing with them even for small cheap parts

If the stickers are missing I would have some serious rage.

Unfortunately I found out the VIN plate was missing when a car shipper wanted to verify the VIN prior to shipping.
The DOT sticker is still on the bulkhead....sort of.....wait for it........they painted OVER IT!. Still slightly legible, but its really hard to read. Apparently it was too much to ask to tape it off before painting it.

I've run the carfax a few times thanks to some kind brothers in arms on the board. At this point I'm not worried about someone else using the VIN, I'm worried about my resale value (although I don't plan on selling) and registration / inspection issues. I'm going to try to keep this thread just to the facts and replacement question, as I really need to focus on getting this plate replaced.

There are unfortunately a lot more details to share on my build, which I will be saving for a later time. A cautionary tale to say the least.

Seriously? Outrageous. Makes you want to do all your own work! At least you can only blame yourself if you lose it.

Not going to comment on removing a vin tag and then losing it or painting over the uber important decal in the left footwell, others have that covered.

Land Rover has roving regional ombudsmen. IE a regional customer service rep who has the ability to fix situations a dealership cant or wont. If confronted with your situation I'd hunt down one of those guys and seek help, offering lubricity (cash) for a happy ending.

Very good advice! I'm not a huge fan of attorneys or law suits, but it definitely seems like you need to talk to one and start one!! Someone stole your plate, plain and simple. They've definitely killed part of the value of your rig since this will always be a black mark on your truck if you ever try to sell it!!

That's a good point, the After Market Manager might be able to get further than the parts department. I would speak to some management at the dealership. You should be able to get what you want (if available) since you have purchased multiple cars there.

I wouldn't waste time talking to a dealer. LRNA or even LR UK should be able to provide this.

Who would you contact at LRNA? Its not like the headquarters has a retail parts counter. He will have to go through the dealership more than likely.

I am certain that they will require the local dealer to request and verify the trucks identity before letting go of a VIN tag and or decal.

No such thing as a misplaced VIN tag. If you had it, and you didn't lose it, then it is theft. I would involve the authorities ASAP.

That is not true. We replace them all the time at the dealership when we replace dash boards. Sometimes techs forget to order the VIN sticker when they order the dash, but it can be ordered later. It takes about a month to get and requires a lot of signatures. I just don't know if they are available for the NAS Defenders.

If I can get a replacement vin plate, do you think there's still an impact on my resale value?

If I can't replace it, how much would you think that damage would cost me? (It's still got good documentation for the purchase and the build.)

I should mention that 15 years ago I worked for LRNA (briefly) out in Irvine. (Before moving the group back to New Jersey.) Although I still have one very good friend there, I didn't want to bother him with this if I could solve it through the dealer. This has been one of many issues with this build that's been a major pain in my ass!

Just having the sticker painted over would devalue it in my opinion. Might even stop you from getting a new VIN plate from LR.

Really sucks

Here's a poor picture of said sticker.

Protected forever....encased in carbonite. (Some of you got the reference.)
