Mean Green

Hey all. As I'm sure ya'll know I've been having a lot of problems with getting the 90 to start in the cold. I'm wondering if anyone that has a Mean Green starter has had the kinds of problems I've been having. Check out the thread "Pissed" for and explination of the problem.

Thanks in advance.

Tyler

Nope, I backed my 90 into the tent when it was about 30 out, the battery had not been charged in over 2 weeks and the engine did not start, it was just the starter (mean green) that pushed it in low range reverse backwards about 20 feet. It did start clicking a bit torwads then end as the bettery died off, but it was moving the truck on a slight uphill all on it's own and most of the tires are at less then 15 psi. Allot of the time on the trail when I stall I never take it out of gear to start the engine. Take it to autozone, and they can test the battery and alt to make sure they are not the problem.

How much do the Mean Green's run for a 94 D-90? Anybody have a ballpark price range?

Run away from Mean Green!! There customer service sucks as do the starters. I am currently on my second starter from them after the first one stoped working when it was cold out after being on the truck for 2 months. The only reason I'm running another one is because they won't refund the money.

Good to know FlippedRover, so is the stock one better? Or is there another alternative?

I don't know Tyler, what did you do to it? I dunk mine all the time, and the winters up here are a bit colder then they are for you. I tell ya that starter draws less current then stock and does more work. I backed my 90 20 feet into the tent with only the starter and 1 optima batter, and my 90 had not been run for over a month when I did that. It has never failed to start my 90, and a few times mI had the park brake pulled and someone left it in gear and the starter still lurched the 90 forward.

But another option for all is the northern or winter version of the stock starter, I think it has a bigger motor on it.

Did nothing unusual. Drove through a river a couple of times like normal. I don't know maybe I got a bad one. Still there customer service sucks. We'll see how long this one lasts.

Damn it not again!!

Ok now that its getting cold out my mean green starter is starting to crap out AGAIN!!!! I think it is a sad thing when a supposedly good fairly expensive aftermarket starter keeps crapping out when its cold out!

Rant over

I don't know Tyler, you must have got one made on Friday. Mine spins the engine over faster then anything I have seen and doesn't give me much fuss at all and I haven't done anything to it. Did you put breather tubes on it before wading? If not how can you expect it to work? Unlike most starters they seal it up pretty good, so when water gets in it, it can't get back out again. I've beat the crap out of mine and it still spins like crazy. A few times I have started the engine in first gear high range from a stop! Their customer service sucks, but the product rulls!

Personally, I would take the starter to a local shop and have it re-built. I have taken a number of starters to a local guy for work, and they come back better than new.

If you want to dump the Mean green for a regular, I have one that has 3 starts on a fresh re-build out of my '87 RRC, which should be that same.
