Matt Taylor on Defender

Land Rover Model Plans
Wed 16 Mar, 2005, 11:02
In a US interview, Land Rover MD, Matthew Taylor, has spoken of Land Rover's model plans over the next two years.

Speaking to American website, thecarconnection.com, he said that Range Rover could get a V12 engine from the Aston Martin. Given that the latest supercharged V8 produces 390 bhp, one assumes the V12 would have to produce around 450 bhp to justify the extra cost. He also said that the Defender would carry on indefinitely. Land Rover had been working on a replacement, but the production level of 25,000 per year did not justify the investment. Apparently the costs of producing the Defender have been reduced (it was probably the most labour intensive vehicle to come out of a Western factory), so it remains profitable.

Finally, the Freelander replacement should appear in summer 2006, to be made in the Halewood factory currently (under) used by Jaguar for the X-Type.

Ha, just like I thought. We'll never see a "new" NAS Defender....

What they need to do is put a heavy-duty suspension on the D110 so it gets the same classification as the Hummer. Those things still dont have airbags.

I think that would mean over 8,600 lb class, thats pretty heavy, even for a 110.

I don't know if I like that, what about chicks driving Defenders? They better not be manly, at least not the ones I meet!

I meant in a Hemingway sort of way - the rugged individualist. I'm failing to be gender inclusive. Manly women are welcome too!
