Marking The End Of An Era.....

It will happen this coming Friday.....the end of an era. Friday January 29, 2016 will mark the last day of production for the descendant of the original Land Rover, the last time that the Defender as we know it will roll off the assembly lines at Solihull.

For a good read, check out the link to the article below:
http://www.thegentlemansjournal.com/...-the-defender/

Come Friday evening, you can count on finding me out at a pub somewhere, raising a glass in honor of the day.

Good read. Thank you for the link.

Friday? That really crept up on me! Oh, I'll be drinking! Hopefully not alone again! ;-)

So, any get together's planned? Anyone?

I have to wonder who will get the last SN Defender, and if they will know it? Will Land Rover keep it for a Museum? Will it get put away in a hanger as an investment? Will it get used as a Defender should? May the owner will never even know it was the last off the line??

Sad end of en era, but I guess it just goes to show I'm getting old..

I hope the photo works...

A friend works at JLR and has popped to see the VERY LAST Defender, just before it goes into the paint shop.
It will be a soft top in Keswick Green and will be owned by Roger Crathorne.
If he puts any more pics up, I'll post them on here for you.

Would be cool to have all the workers sign an internal door/wing/something....I wonder if they do something like that? That truck will certainly appeal to collectors in the future.

Gotta wonder if #1 of the new line will be collectible in 30-50yrs

Absolutely would be!

Hmmm, Don't know, its hard to imagine something new today that is going to collectible in 30-50 years, but I guess 30-50 years ago there were enthusiasts who said the same thing about 'new' vehicles then too??

People collect stupid stuff so no telling. Today, vehicles seemingly are designed to a specific economic life and then to be recycled- not last indefinitely.
The successor wont be a hand built truck which in my mind is a big piece of why series and defenders have such a magnetism for many of us.
A robotics built truck,no matter what it's outward appearance, will have the the personality of an FJ.
Its very cool that Land Rover had the world wide demand for the product that drove the business model to keep these trucks in production with minor changes for nearly 7 decades.

I believe all of these are already sold (like someone put a deposit down), from what I recall all orders had to be put in before Dec 31 2015. I could be wrong though....

When on the tour we were told final orders ended June 26, 2015. Here it was in LRO

Nope, the best you could get is a 90 with 150 HP from a 2.2 diesel engine

Apparently there was an additional 50 being built (past the dealership orders) and O/T was running in the factory to get these done. Probably vehicles for "special" people I would guess,(like the one for Roger Crathorne).

It was an amazing day I spent there in November, so glad to have had the opportunity.

If you want a load of photos from the assembly line floor, feel free o download them from my drop box link.
