LR3 Reliability

Hi All,

Looking into an LR3 as a dog-mobile/cross-country road trip vehicle. The one in question is a 2006 with about 116k. I know to stay away from 05 and I know there were a few reliability threads back around 2008-2012, but haven't seen anything recent. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thumbs up

I have 150k miles in my 06 LR3 and I love it!
I change oil every 5k, flush coolant, front/rear/xfer box oil exery 40k
If you take the plunge and buy one with a 4.4L V8, replace the plastic coolant bleeder with a $1.50 brass barb from Home Depot.

Happy hunting...

There are several recent threads here if you search. Also there is a "things to do" thread over on the nas-row forum.
Almost at 140k on my 06. Best vehicle I've ever owned.

So what's up with the 05s? Coming up to five years with our no major issues so far.

nothing really other than the potential differential issues. not sure why they have gained a reputation.

155k on my 06 HSE with the HD package. I have it listed in the for Sale section. Best all around Rover I've ever owned- pulling camp- and car- trailers, people hauling, off-roading at Rausch Creek, only towed it home twice in 9 years: faulty height sensor harness, and a water logged TCCM from a curled windscreen plenum.
I think it's a very distinctive profile in a world of rounded cars....

Only 112k on my 06, but that's b/c for awhile she had a 1.5km commute to work.

In my opinion the LR3 is one of the best trucks for the $ you spend in the field today. There are certainly some issues but the drivetrain is superb and the utility of the vehicle is excellent. A lot of content on Expedition Portal's Rover section where most of what you'd want to know has been covered.

So the search is down to two. Pretty much identical 2006 SE. One has approx 116k and the other has 138kk. The 116k truck is in far rougher shape cosmetically (chipped windshield, worn driver seat, radio screen not working) but seems solid mechanically from the records. It's at a used dealer that sells a lot of older luxury cars. The 138k truck is at a Land Rover dealer(Glenwood Springs) and is priced approx $500 above the lower mileage one. Is a ppi necessary from a franchised dealer? Any thoughts on which way you all would recommend going?

NO, they are going to tell you whatever to get it sold. I'd keep looking, plenty out there, with lower miles too. My '06 just crossed 81K.

I'm going to get flamed for this, but get an '08 or newer.

I had an '08 & it was the most reliable LR I've ever owned.

okay new one in the running. 2007 SE pretty fully loaded. Dealer called it a 'lux' which I told him was only available on the HSE and he didn't like that. The seats do have lumbar though which the 06 I was looking at didn't. Anyway, what do you guys think this truck should be priced at? ColoDisco will be checking it out for us on Tuesday, but I'd like to know what you think just from this info

2007 SE LR3 106k

The Good:
Lots of service history at LR dealer on the carfax
2 owners - last one had close to 9 years with it
Color combo works for us and has the options we want(minus HD)

The bad
Minor Accident - carfax says very minor run in with a fence
Only one key - definitely need two with how my GF's keys sometimes go missing
No floor mats
Dealer does not seem to want to sell it
Not many other options locally and the dealer seems to know it.

This is just my opinion. You should have a knowledgeable mechanic do a compression check and have the engine oil tested. At the end of the day none of that info you mention above really matters because someone with or without more info than you can swoop in and take it at any given time.

Always get a PPI. If you get scooped on a deal, that's ok. Better to be careful and have someone else take the odd problem car. If taken care of which isn't hard, they are fantastic.

I think 06-08 is fine, I had an 06.

How reliable are LR4s so far? I see a lot of LR3s with 150k miles or more...

Just picked up a LR4 with 25k and a V6. Pulled a 5000# Airstream to Colorado and back, 5000 miles, uneventful.

Similar trip last year to Yellowstone, using a 145k mile LR3 and a 2000# Everest. 5,300 uneventful miles, other than a self induced issue from leaving the sun roof partially open.

Not sure if it's the familiarity, but I think I like the LR3 better....!
