They extended the catalyst warranty on on 03-05 Range Rovers because of the welds on the convertors cracking. An LR3 should have an 8 yr 80k warranty on the emissions system.

It's in your owner's manual. I forget which book, but I believe it is right in the front of one of them.

More digging...looks like it could be the timing chain tensioners (4 total), guides, or the VVT units (2 total). Very labor intensive job...10 hours by the book, so it would actually be more cost effective to change out all those parts once the front is off instead of finding out its the other side or the VVT and not a tensioner or the wrong tensioner. $1400 in parts alone.

Loud rattle on cold start, faint ticking at idle. Pretty sure it is not the cats. Common enough to have threads on LR/Jag forums...

Good lord.

What engine(s) seem to be affected based on your research? [hint: please don't say V6]

My wife has the 08 RRS (4.4L). Pretty much the same truck.

In addition to what the others have said, LR had a problem with a coating they used in the diffs or axle housings. Basically it would chip off into the oil after a while and wipe the diffs. I cannot remember where, but I found a letter from LR that had what VIN's they shifted over to a new coating that does not do this.

I think that effected the 05-08's. I know that mine was made after the new coating.

Some say, do the front and rear diff services early, if you get chips out of it, get ready.

Resurrecting this thread. Great info here but I have a question. Would you buy a 2005 LR3 with 160k on the clock? They are asking 10k for it but it has been for sale for quite a while so I bet I can get it cheaper. That many miles normally would be a red flag but I have no experience with LR3's. If the answer to this question is yes then what would you feel would be a good price? Any advice? Thanks.

Well, I have an '05 LR3 with 160,00 miles on it (almost 170,000 now)....

While it's starting to have minor issues (an idler pulley on the belts is going, control arms need replacing again, just did the brakes 2 weeks ago all round), it's going as solid as it was the day I bought it.

10k for it is good to go. Land Rover really hit this model out of the park.

$10k sounds steep to me. Get a pre-purchase inspection done by a dealer or Land Rover specialist. Also look at the tires, since they go through tires every 20-40k miles and they are expensive tires.

Says it has 5 new tires. Also has a roof rack of sorts and a rear tire carrier. I still have trouble buying a vehicle with that many miles but maybe I need to get over that.

Tyler, I would highly recommend having it inspected for stuff it currently needs as well as what it will likely need in the near term based on the type of driving and mileage you plan to use it for. If the big picture isn't pretty walk away. At the end of the day these are just about everywhere and odds are equal or better values will always be there.
