Lotus Rant -- what is it with british vehicles and oil cooler lines

My lotus blew an oil cooler line and I think the motor is toast (it's ticking after I fixed the line and refilled it).

*rant on*

Why do we need oil coolers at all! Now I have to pay $2500 for a used motor and transmission kill a weekend + putting it in.

*rant off*

I figure I can get $1000 back from the trans so I am going to be into this for only a couple k but still.

The motor is only $2500? for a Lotus? That is a great deal. While it's out, and you have to install a new one anyways, tweak it so it runs like a scalded dog.

Are the oil cooler lines not part of the Toyota assembly that Lotus buys? If they are, you should be cursing the Japanese.

I would characterize its current performance as "running like a scalded dog." Perhaps Ron's performance objective should be to make it run like a "raped ape."

Nope, they are lotus. They go all the way to the front of the car and back. On lotustalk, a bunch of people had it happen. Since this car is insured for comp and collision, it would have been better had it caught fire and burned to the ground.

Surprisingly, fixing the oil cooler line cost me only the cost of three hose clamps and a few minutes with the dremel to cut the fitting and maybe 30 minutes of contorsions to take it out and put it back together. So other than the hosed motor and the tow back home from long island until 4am, it would have been no big deal.

Yes, used motors are cheap because they rarely go bad (yet) and they are plentiful due to the number of people who wreck their lotus. It is also the same motor as in a Toyota Corrola XRS, Toyota Matrix XRS, Celica GTS and the Pontiac Vibe GT so there are other sources out there. This is part of the reason I bought the lotus. If it were a ferrari, 997 porsche or an Aston, it would have been at least ten times as much money. I figure the current motor with the ticking is still worth some money too for someone building one up. She has about 32k on her. The used motor has 23k on it and is out of a 2005.

As far as a raped ape, I am considering a supercharger.

Go talk to the dealership... I had a problem with my Lexus a few years ago and the dealer helped out, even though it was out of warranty.

Ron,

Are you picking up your engine in Brooklyn this weekend? I still have the trailer and call me if you need it.

Hey Ron, quick question. I know nothing about Lotus but I'm thinking of getting myself an Elise- is there anyway to stop this from happening? I had my truck fail twice before I just took the damn cooler lines off (I replaced with nos after the first fire, and stainless after the second). I would like one but I don't need another "incident".

What are the preventative measures for this? I know I could have searched Lotus forums, but they all tend to try and answer the "can an elise be a dd" question.

Thanks in advance.

It is a random failure caused by an insufficient crimp on the line. You could replace all the oil cooler lines with uprated lines (which I may or may not do). I only found a handful of other people that it happened too. I would not be concerned with this in buying a lotus. The only somewhat common failure is cam wear, I would check that, otherwise they are bullet proof (compared to a D90) .

What about water intrusion? Doesn't water collect in the trunk? Does a hard top make a difference?

I don't have water in my truck, even if you do it is not a big deal as you just pull the carpet and foam out. Nothing in there is water senstive (the battery is in there but it is in the corner). If you adjust the windows and top, water does not make its way into the cab to any appreciable degree.

BTW I am evilfij on lotustalk.com too.

I actually joined the site earlier this week when I was doing some reading on Elises and Exiges. I'm definitely not looking for anything right now but if I were it would be hard to ignore how far the prices have dropped on e46 M3s. I was also looking at '06 Elises. Maybe in about 2 years - who knows what will be available then.

Ron, do you have a hard top?
