Looks like I may have a fight on my hands with Ca DMV
So over a year ago I took my truck and all the paperwork to the DMV to register it. Went in and walked out with plates and registration. A few months later, still no title. Contacted the DMV and they told me I was missing some paperwork, the UK title. I explained to about the export document, I think it's the V57. Months later still nothing, I called they said its on so and so's desk and they will get back to me. I called again just to ask questions about importing and was told that even though a car is diesel it had to go to a smog check mechanic to verify it complies with Ca standards. That's not going to happen. It has to be a 1968 vehicle or older to be exempt, but I can register it in another state and then transfer it into Cal. Then yesterday I get a letter from DMV and this just shows how brilliant they are, they say " Sorry Mr Zolezzi the BMW you are trying to import from Canada is not Cal compliant and you may want to think about not bringing the car into the US". HMM? So now I have to call again and get this straight and hopefully whoever I talk to will be tired from the long weekend and fix it and send me a title, yeah, right. The point is, and the head of the import registration department explained this to me the first time I spoke with her, that they are educating the DMV employees on what is and is not allowed in Cal. Just a heads up for anyone in this lovely state of California that wants to import a Defender, you need to register the car in another state first then transfer it here. They are cracking down. I swear California should declare independence from the US, they seem to think they are a seperate country already anyways.
