I didn't want to pollute Ron's FS thread but I had a question about Pappy for you guys.

Obviously this stuff is super popular right now and though I've never tasted it, it's supposed to be great.

I enjoy fine tequila and mezcal but I've only recently started drinking bourbon. I got real sick on JD in college and couldn't drink it for years but I've finally come around and like it now.

I can't afford a $1000 bottle but certainly there must be some other brands out there that cost much less but are still excellent bourbons. What do you guys recommend?

I've tried Four Roses 10-year and Eagle Rare 10-year. I also tried some Evan Williams Bottled in Bond which a bartender recommended to me and it was surprisingly good. What are some other good ones to try that won't break the bank?

Hibiki is one of the better ones I have had in a long time. I just started sipping on the Angels Envy and think it is a fair bourbon. Pappi is crazy priced, I may just stick to Macallan 18! I can get 5 bottles for the cost of 1 20 yo Pappi.

Buffalo Trace is closest to pappy in taste among reasonably priced ($45 a handle) bourbon.

That may be because Buffalo Trace makes it. Of course PVW supplies the recipe, but BT distilles it.

There is a local brewery aging a porter in 15 year old pappy barrels. Set for release March 1st. Should be awesome.

That sounds interesting. I prefer port older than I am though. Here's a pic of the Fonseca's Finest Porto, 1977 I had earlier this year. Great with a cigar. Cool bottle, too.

I was able to try some 15 year Pappy today. Not bad. $18 for a shot at Oak on Fourteenth in Boulder. For you Colorado folks the bartender says The Sundowner in Boulder has the entire Pappy lineup.

I have found un-reasonably priced bottles. My normal source ONLY got 3 bottles this year and he decided to hold on to them for himself. He is trying to get more during the second release which should happen very soon.
