Legal trails in/around Kona, Big Island Hawaii?

A buddy of mine is in Hawaii right now and asked if I can try to find some legal trails for him to try out while he's there. I won't mention what type of 4wd he has out there as I'll get flamed... ha.

I know there are a few Hawaii'ers on this board, got any tips?

I saw some places north of the airport where you could drive over the lava to get to the beach. Some decent rock steps.

The road down into the Waipio valley and then the roads down in the Waipio Valley itself, while a tad tame, are fun with the top off. The locals there are tolerant of the tourists cruising around, but I'd take extra care to be respectful and as low impact as possible. If your friend is driving anything that looks like a stock rental jeep he will raise more eyebrows than if it looks a bit customized or non stock. Every tourist drives a stock jeep.

There are all kinds of trails around in that area before heading down into the valley itself, but I would highly recommend seeking out one of the local 4wd clubs and getting up with them. Rightfully so, the locals have so many tourists to deal with they don't take kindly to trespassing.
