Legal beach driving/camping - Eastern Shore, MD/VA/DE areas?

Anybody know of legal places to spend a weekend camping/beach driving? Preferably not terribly far from DC.
Wifey might want a hotel for one of the nights, but I'd like to camp out another one, preferably with the dog and rover on the beach (missing Australia right now...)

Thoughts?

I was thinking Assateague, but I can't clearly figure out what is and isn't legal from the 2 links below. I figured it couldn't hurt to check here.

Maybe it was Assateague, but I could have sworn they were in Chincoteague when my parents had beach access a few years ago.

outlines it pretty well. You can drive on the beach with a permit in the Natl Seashore but not the State Park.
Let me know when you decide to go. May be up for it.

There are 12 miles of beach in Maryland and a small section of beach in Virginia open to over-sand vehicles. An annual OSV permit may be purchased for $70 to $150 depending upon the type of access desired. Specific equipment is required.

*Pets are prohibited in the entire Virginia portion of Assateague Island, even in your car. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manages nearly all of the land area on the Virginia portion of Assateague Island as a National Wildlife Refuge.

Good to know thanks, maybe I'll stick to the MD side then. No plans to go yet, just thinking about it

In looking @ the bulletins it appears the Virginia portion is closed presently due to high tide expectations etc and concerns motorists will get trapped in that remote area.

I was pretty bummed about these restrictions as we travel with the dogs. I had thought only New Jersey was a Nazi state, although we do have Island State Park.
One more reason to go to Cape Cod, ACK, & the Vineyard

You can drive Brigantine..

Not sure if still allowed, but many many years ago, residents of a beach front house , were able to obtain a permit to drive at night during season and anytime the rest

Assateague is a nice spot and I think it may be what you are looking for, we go there with dogs quite often, but you need to understand how it works there.
First off to drive on the beach you will need a permit which costs I think 100 bucks, which is good for 1 year. They don't sell daily permits anymore unless something has recently changed.
There are 2 campgrounds there , 1 state owned ( no dogs) and 1 federal, Dogs allowed, and this is by far the better spots anyway.
You cannot camp on the beach, but if you are fishing or at least set up a rod or two, then you can. weird as that sounds thats how you can camp on the beach.

I just called the ranger station and asked for a registration form to be mailed to me.

What he said was very confusing:

He said that driving the length of Assateague isn't allowed on an OSV, as the remainder of the trail is some kind of state park? The total trail length is about 13 miles and then you have to turn around. Somehow I don't buy that as the trail map shows the Virginia OSV Zone as ending at "The Gut".

I'm in if you'll have me I promise not to ride your ass!

The state park is to the North of the Assateague Natl. Seashore Park. No OSV access in that park.
This map http://www.nps.gov/pwr/customcf/apps...nal%20Seashore

Shows the Md state park as well as where you can get out onto the beach within the Natl Seashore. Depending on when, I'm up for it as well, haven't surf fished in a while and have been tripping over my gear for a while now. The camp grounds are on the bay side and I have had many tell me that the mosquitoes will carry away normal sized people.

Assateague is great. We've talked about going back for years but haven't gotten around to it. Do it over the summer and I'm game.
