LED replacements: class 101 input discussion pls

I'd thought I'd start here on this. A couple of my lights have gone, and off I went to replace them. Well got me looking at the LED replacement which for some reason I really like. Saw them in a couple of the Land Rover mags and thought to myself - not too shabby -. Thing is I know nothing about this so wanted to float it on the board. I'm thinking whole hog and replacing everything except the head lights. Interior and exterior

Has anyone done this? Can it be done? My mind thinks, pull out the old bulbs and replace with LED bulbs. Several threads on this site have discussed it. BUT... If I can post it, I pulled a page off the Sylvannia web site on LEDs and it was confusing. Said that brake lights are easy to replace, but indicator lights are a no go (LEDs cannot flash??) and that the colored plastic covers on car light housings bleed out the light of LEDs. This was all weird as Sylvannia produces the LEDs. What can y'all say to this?

Also on this thought, as my 10w interior dome light is so weak, is it not possible to reposition the dome light from above wind screen center to inside the dash well (I have a 1994 D-90) and then series 4 or 5 LEDs to shine up and illuminate that space?

Of, and what really got me going was the LR dealership wanting $10.99 for an interior dome light, 120v 10w which I got at Pepboys for $2.99 (and that was a 2 pak).

I dont know anthing about LED's, but to reposition your dome light, all you would have to do is remove the trim and run the wires through the dash instead of around the windshield. Its not complex.

Have a good read through this site: http://autolumination.com/

The signal lights can be done, but will require a load resistor to simulate the original lights to make the flasher relay work. Personally I don't see the point. Maybe replacing the lights with complete LED light units makes sense as they look nicer, but just the bulbs makes little sense. Dim lights like the gauges can do with changing to bright LEDs.

As to the dome light, I've fitted a unit designed for motor homes. Looks nicer and has two 1157 bulbs. You can be blinded by the light output with both bulbs on. Only $15 or so.

You can see it in this picture

I thought you could just pop out the bulbs, and put in LED style bulbs.
Thanks for the link.

www.ledtronics.com is another site. I ran these in my previous defender
Very informitive web site. I ordered the turn signals too, and they didnt work. they ran to low amps that the turn signal indicator could recognize. I tried a resistor and nothing.

I have done all mine in LEDs. Quite simple, just get all the right bulbs and pop them in. Indicators need load risistors to make them work.

Best regards

James,
this is what is getting me. You are the 2nd UKer to say they have no problems, but we on this side of the pond seem to be remiss. Let me ask:
where did you get your bulbs?
Which ones did you use (manufacturer & model #) as in what are the right bulbs?
Anything else to make it idiot proof for me?

PS Its gone midnight UK time and you are online? What are you, drinking coffee or do you work the 3rd shift?

Hi Paul,

I got mine from www.ultraleds.co.uk

Have a look at the car section and you should match most bulbs.
You can just fit in a 39 mm dome light bulb with the 6 leds so is alot brighter.

They sell load resistors that clip onto the wires as well.

LEDs produce a much nicer crisp white light rather than a dull yellow.

Ends up costing quite a bit to get them all done.

Best regards

James

p.s It was only just gone 11pm last night, was just getting my fix of land rover forums before bed
