it seems like it is down to a sony or a mac. i have never been disappointed in anything sony. i owned a sony laptop 5 years ago (it was tiny... it was like 1/2 size) and loved it. when i sold it i got most if not all of my money back (not sure how i did that). then in the other hand i love my ipod(s) and everyone who has apple's raves about them. at first i was not into the gimmick of apple, then i realized they may catch on... and bam they caught on and who knew to buy all their stock up!!?!?!?!
i just have to figure out which is better for me:
smaller/lighter
quicker/faster/more horse power
bigger hard-drive
cd burner
music, music and more music

i will take/buy a used one if someone wants to sell (i have no problem with that and also have no problem with a new one.)

I am sure you can find a thinner, smaller, lighter laptop than the Panasonic toughbook, but I highly doubt that they will take an impact as well. Additionally Panasonic does offer smaller, lighter versions of the toughbook.

Sure it will cost more money and weight a little more but that just goes with the territory when you purchase a rugged product.

The recommendation was simply based on the fact that Keith said it must sustain multiple drops. After all most any laptop computer will achieve his other requirements but few will stand up to multiple bouts of abuse.

get a macbook pro

For the needs you've described, get a macbook (or a macbook pro if price isn't a concern). I used to be a PC user, and switched to mac and never looked back. Apple just makes it so easy to upload and share photos, music, make a website, check email, etc. It's all integrated.

As far as the "drop five times" test, I like the xplore technologies ix104C3 tablet PC. I have one and love it. But you do need an external keyboard if you're going to do a lot of typing. Great for mapping and has an integrated GPS receiver.

But you should get a macbook for general purpose use.

Silly user! Steve Jobs sez you're not supposed to take songs off an ipod!

Assuming you have been synching with a pc, copy the songs from it to the mac and import to iTunes.

If you bought all of your music via iTunes from apple you can just download them all to the mac from iTunes.

Just don't try sync your iPod before making sure you have a copy of the songs somewhere first as it will reset the contents.

First, get Senuti (free) to transfer from iPod back to your Mac. Second, get either OpenOffice 3 or Neooffice. Both are very good, free alternatives to the bloated pig that is office. I you want to pay for a package, get iLife. Pages (comes in iLife) is very good about reading and writing office files.

Glad ya got the MacBook; you won't be disappointed.

hey keith, considering the line of work you're in you should have gotten an atari. forget the ipod, real men play pong. as long as you keep the fluids topped up its reasonably reliable. its not too technologically advanced so you can work on it yourself. they dont make them anymore so they are now considered classics and hold their value. chances are, you will be the only kid on your block who has one.

As far as burning CD's....just stick a blank disk in and right mouse click on the CD icon that appears on your desktop after the CD is inserted. Self-explanatory after that...

Keith, after about a week or two, setup an appointment at the nearest Apple store to show you some "how to's" as well as answer questions that you have. Well worth it and free!

Ask away. Not sure about a manual... When it comes to needing answers...google, forums, youtube, the search function at the top and when there was something I didn't know how to put into words, I stopped at the Apple store.

Did you get Mac or a Pro...the mouse pad on the pro is genius!
