Land Rover Greenville & Columbia SOLD!

Well, we found out yesterday that our Land Rover dealerships in Greenville and Columbia, SC are being sold... I may be unemployed as of January 28th... the first time I haven't had a job since I was like 13 years old!

I'm still shooting for a move to California... this is just another reason to head out.

I applied to the dealerhsip in Newport Beach, CA so I'm hoping they respond soon...

Good luck Dan. I used to hang out at that dealership every once in awhile when I was living there and working for Land Rover Corporate in Irvine. Good guys....or at least they were at the time.

Best of luck. Are the dealerships just changing ownership or is LR gone?

They're changing ownership, but I'm just expecting to be jobless since they already have 6 sales guides at the store... we have 4 here... 10 sales guides seems like overkill. We're here twirling our thumbs most days.

Thanks for the support! Who wouldn't want to hire a Brand Advocate?! If you guys know anyone there, please put in a good word for me.

Typically when dealerships change owners all of the current employees have to reapply for their jobs. You would likely get the job, but probably take a pay cut. Aren't salesmen pretty much 100% commission paid? If so, there is no such thing as too many salesmen. I know that is the case for mechanics since we are paid by the job. The dealership doesn't care if there isn't enough work for everyone, they just care about their bottom dollar.

Yeah, you're right... The guy that interviewed us today said that they hope to average 100 cars a month... If we each sold 10 cars it wouldn't be half bad if it's a good mix of new/used... But there's more than likely a couple of hot shot salesmen there already getting the upper hand...

I guess time will tell...

Depends if you get benefits on the cost side. Best dealers tend to have fewer, better salespeople. Overstaffing is not the model in high line in my admittedly limited experience.

Dumb question? If they bought both stores and aren't planning on shutting either of them down, where are the extra sales consultants coming from?

I always thought all that dealers cared about was the bottom dollar too, but I work at a dealership that goes above and beyond what I expected of them. They treat all of the employees well and do a ton of community service work. We are busy as hell and I work with people that have been here for a long time, some over 30 years.

Dan, sorry to hear about your job. I know it must come as quite a shock. I remember when I found out that Dr. Frasher had sold the LR Hilton Head Center. It was only 6 months or so right after my wife and I had decided to move back to Raleigh. Boy did I feel like I had dodged a bullet!

Forgive me, but I have to ask, do you know what is happening to the Asheville Center? Is it being sold as well?

Again, sorry to hear your news, but best of luck in your search!

Dan as a current just came to CALI from the northeast I say take your knowledge and skill from years and Land Rover and see your plan and do it I did and landed at an LR dealer here in southern cal and so far so good. You have a skill.

Dan, I hope these changes in SC end up helping you find the ideal solution.

Another way to possibly think of this situation is you should interview them. Turn the tables and ask them to answer the hard questions. Ask them to explain how the change in ownership is going to benefit you? What are they going to do or capable of doing that the old owners were not? IMO the street is two way. Remember you have valuable knowhow that a successful dealership should respect and acknowledge. Don't forget that and try to respectfully relay that message. Then if you later leave it is on your terms and if the SoCal responds positively maybe you tell them you ready to leave because you have concerns about whether the new ownership has what it takes to be successful going forward.

Dan, doesn't your family own the dealerships?

I was in the works of being an in-law, but it didn't work out. Ha, I'm sure I'd be kept on board if it did, but my belief is things happen for a reason.

The Asheville store is safe because it is already a combined Jag/LR dealership, and as far as I know, it is not being sold.

I still see Cali in my future... I'm going to wrap up a house purchase I've already committed to... anyone need to rent a house in Greenville, SC? Lol...

Thanks guys!

But only one of them came back with a BCS win.
