Kicking an idea around

As many know I'm on a farm in central Virginia. While I don't have large elevation changes I do have some tight stone laced stream beds and about 7 acres that's fenced out and intended to be used for trails.
With many acres of grass pastures space wouldn't be an issue. I'd bet we could get Will Tillery's band to play one night. roast a pig or 5, beer truck. etc.

I had been kicking around the idea of hosting a US version of the Old Soddbury sort out
http://www.newbury4x4andvintagesparesday.co.uk/

http://www.beaulieu.co.uk/beaulieu-e...jumble-sortout

While my central East Coast location wouldn't be ideal for folks from the West if there was sufficient draw I think vendors would come.

Not looking to profit but thought I have a venue, what can we do with it that would be of benefit to the rover community. What do you guys think of the idea ?

I think it is great idea, but I would be really careful with local authorities and permits.

DC/Dulles is 3hrs, Richmond 2hrs, Raleigh 2hrs. There is an amtrack station 25 miles away on the Southern Crescent line. I'm about 15 miles from where the Civil War ended @ Appomattox Court House.

Sounds like an excellent idea. If it's in the spring I might even be able to make it.

I'm going to check with the county but need to sort through issues like insurance because there are some real punks out there.

We could certainly have several trail development weekends in prep but for the most part just mow the fields down low and have people set up. Trails will have to be something I give more thought to given the liability and may not be possible.

I was thinking Spring- April is incredible in this area with Redbud and Dogwood in bloom. But have to look @ what others already have scheduled.

I would ignore the trail aspect. Keep it simple and get that good first. Virginia is the place to have this. You Roavers are well organized and sell many parts.

just looked @ the county website and any gathering of greater than 250 people requires a permit. Not a big deal but guess we would need to nail down a date well in advance.

I agree. A Sodbury like event would be enough to get me there.

Doug-
Def think its a good idea per the discussion we all had on it at Conclave-I'd totally be in. I concur on the focus on the gathering first, trails down the road; helps on the insurance/liability front. With enough advance notice, and Pedro bringing a uhaul truck of his spares, you'd have quite an event cooking.

I agree with Ray. I would focus on the gathering first with a swap meet included. That's basically how things started at Penlan and it grew from there.

I'd say plan this for sometime in the spring. Doesn't seem like there are as many events then for whatever reason. This may be a chance for me to get rid of some junk and visit some family that way

Even though it is on the wrong side of the country, we would make it a trip - sponsor/support the event with raffle donations, funds, etc... (drive in or fly in depending on dates of course)

Seems like as good an excuse as any to put names and faces to trucks and forum names...

(Doug, you may want to talk to the folks who put on Mogfest in Oregon - similar event/group as to their experience with insurance and paperwork)

Totally open before the Overland show circuit starts up with the overland Expo in May.
