Jeep question ...

I Know many of you are ex-jeepers or have one in the closet next to your 'weekend wear' ...

I rented one in USVI and it's been a bit wet ... In 2H I can barely make it up and round left hand switchbacks without smoking a tyre ... But when I put it in 4H it drives like it's got a center diff lock engaged.

Does 4H also lock a center diff or is this just a complete POS?

4 Hi locks the center diff and puts it in 4wd. There is no open center diff 4wd option.

There is no centre diff. Two wheel drive and four wheel drive.

There is, it just locks along with engaging 4wd (high or low)

Correct, true 4wd. No all wheel drive'esqe option. The rubicon has front and rear lockers as well; a few other models now offer a rear locker only.

Thanks. Just wanted to be sure.

It's a G4 color on class 4 roads in USVI.

That stuff falling out of the sky is British sunshine!

Not exactly. There is no differential. Locking or not. There is a chain drive that engages the front drive shaft/axle assembly.

Only two differentials in the vehicle. One in each axle.

Sorry I can't help, but LOL I had EXACTLY the same experience in the USVI (STT & STJ) with rented Jeeps. I ended up just leaving it in 2WD & being VERY careful with the throttle.

It still sucked.

Wife & I have a home on STT & I'm building my Ninety to take with us when we retire there in 2021.

Have a great trip!
