Japanese NAS style Defender

Any thoughts on The defenders brought over from Japan?

Are they worth as much as one brought over by LRNA?

I also imagine that many had their instrument clusters "upgraded" to be in MPH.

This discussion tends to come up every few months if you search around a little more. Some of the info you'll want regarding VINs is in here.

Thanks. I found a Japanese defender but it's starting to look more and more shady.

Yeah, just be really careful with those. Some of those brought in are not legal. (There's a very strict date cutoff for import eligibility.)

You can shoot me details if you don't feel like posting it here, although the VIN info I posted in the other thread is fairly cut and dry.

I think the truck is legit. It's just that the owner didn't disclose that it was imported, has it listed with low original miles and wants way too much.

Oh yeah. That happens a lot of the time with those. I thought you were maybe looking at one to import.

Exactly. Once i pointed out that his spedo was in MPH and not KPH, and that his truck was imported in 2010 and the first odometer reading is at 16k one month after it clears customs... He said he isn't sure what it was when imported and he has no way of finding out...

That's ok, but he can't claim it has low original miles on it and then price accordingly.

I'm sure it is fine and I'm sure he took good care of it, its just not worth 60k. Not to me anyway.

There seem to be a ton of them now with those ghetto speedos. Personally I would never want one of those.

Years ago I knew a guy in Colorado who had three for sale. All three had genuine Land Rover Speedos and a sticker on door panel when the conversion was done.

I would only buy one with the original KM speedo or the conversion done at a dealer.

With that said there is JAP trucks and Middle East ones. Seems the JAP ones have power windows.

The power windows are slower than shit in them.

Are the Japanese righs worth about the same much as the NAS equivalent? Same ball park i mean? Assuming that the miles or kilometers are properly documented?

I'm not interested in bashing them. this guys truck looks pretty clean. I just don't know what kind of base line to compare it to... I mean it is still a rare Defender 90 with all the trim, options, and motor of a 97...

Again covered in long detail. The short answer is that if you or someone else is willing to pay NAS prices for them, then yes they're worth equivalent amounts.

Here's the thread on the ones Barry was talking about:

and if you feel like reading just a small sampling of previous discussions.
