James Baroud RTT

So for my up coming jaunt I decided not to take the mobile base camp and buy an RTT, although it's a bit pricey I went ahead anyway and bought it in black. It wasn't the exact model I wanted but it was in stock and will do, besides it will be here next week...it's going on the D90.

Anyone else using a Baroud? http://www.jamesbaroudusa.com/discoveryevolution.php

Mark - I checked them out at Expo - they look real nice, very easy to put up and low profile...

Not sure the "low profile" suits you though!!!

If I were going to RTT (or even GTT) that is what I'd be looking to get based off all that I've seen. Will be very interested to hear how it works out for you.

I have spoke to Craig at OKtire several times about these, and checked the out at expo too. They look like the real deal. I will be in the market for one of these in the near future...

my buddy has one. if you want a hard shell rtt, they hv no competition. comparing a baroud to magolina is like comparing a lexus to a civic. amd thats not easy for me to say since its french.

I was really pressed with them at the expo, looks like a high quality tent and the hard shell makes a lot of sense to me, I'll be in the market once I buy a trailer

How do they compare price wise? The same, Lexus , civic? We will be in the market soon and often wondered what was better.

Well the Baroud is priced like a lexus. it's about $2700- $3k from what I remember. of course, with that your getting stuff like a built in solar powered ventilation fan.

I have no idea what a maggolina costs. I'm sure Maggolina will need to work up a higher end product to match baroud's new entries to stay in that space.

As mark 2 said I have had mine since may and traveled 5,000 plus miles with it since May. No issues. Have pout it up wet and it has vents built in to dry it as you drive. I read a study, I can find I you like, that was done in the jungle, rain badvweather, etc, by some serious explorers that said that the magolina, was high quality, but that his technology was the same and static fo the last 15 years, while Baroud continues to innovate...

So my most extreme test on this so far was the other night while overnight on Mammoth Mountain in The Great Republic of Cali-forn-ia. So my biggest disadvantage in using a hard shelled RTT is how high it is on my D90. At 8' tall it's kinda hard to position yourself to easily close and secure the RTT under normal conditions. I had to use a ratchet strap to close it enough to secure because the hard to was to slippery with the cold and snow.

During the nite the temp dropped to 25-28 degrees and about 3" of snow where I was the wind never went over 15mph. It did stay relatively warm but I was prepared for cold so not real big deal. The only problem is condensation if you don't ventilate. This RTT has plenty of ventilation options. Snow tends to stick to the soft sides, melts and refreezes but a quick anti stick spray should work for that.

I would think a more cost effective model of another brand might be better, most only do one or two season camping so save the cash...(Pedro)

Very nice! How tall are you Bill? I got to poke around a Grand Raid XXL a few weeks ago and generally really like the JB lineup, but the length is 78". The Maggiolina columbus is 83". I am worried that might be the difference a guy like me at 6'2" tall needs to be comfortable. We will be adding one to our camp arsenal before the springtime. I am planning a trip over to OK4wd at some point to give the discovery evolution a try.

I'm 6'2" and if you lay diagonal you can stretch out!
