Issue with a sale-venting

Posting on here for some feedback!

So my wife is redecorating and sold my Herman Miller chair to someone off craigslist who asked her a ton of questions.

He shows up with his wife and starts asking me about the warranty...I didn't even know until 10 minutes before he showed up that my wife had listed my chair for sale and told him the truth, I ordered it through my office and had no idea about the chair, its warranty or anything else. I do know it is genuine and worth more than $400. I am fairly certain it was a refurb or used when I bought it.

He sat on it, liked it, and drove it home.

Yesterday, someone plows into the nissan I borrowed (to drive my niece around while we babysat) and drives away. I find the damage at midnight last night. The lease is up on the car on Friday.

This morning on my way to the body shop, I get bombarded with text messages from this guy who bought the chair that I cheated him and it is not new...my wife never told him it was new and it is a $1200 chair he got for $400. I offer him $50 to be nice and tell him I will mail him a check. The guy gets more and more angry while I am in meetings and not answering and then it leaks out he broke the chair and is demanding a refund.

I'm pretty sure his plan was to break the chair and get a new one through the warranty?? no idea who has time for this nonsense...I have no idea how to handle this...he knows where I live and my wife's name which is why I am inclined to give him his money back...but I'm sure I'm being scammed.

oh...and while I borrowed the car I hit a rock in the road and destroyed the alloy wheel and tire...which I also replaced yesterday morning...great week so far!

Dooode. You may want to not leave the house for a few days so your run of luck ends. Holy cow that sucks. I get paying the guy to make sure he doesn't come back and do some damage to you or yours because he is in his mind "entitled". Good luck.

Ben, you met the guy, is he capable of harming you or your wife?

I would stop answering any calls or texts from him, especially if the damage was caused by him.

Eff him.

Hey, do you have a Louisville Slugger for sale too?

Agreed don't give in if only for principle.

I'd say let him flip out. If you feel threatened call the local PD.

Report it to craigslist immediately.
If you are that worried about it report it to the police.
Lock all doors and windows. Check all home security avenues that you have in place. Be aware.

Ben you did the right thing.. sometimes its better to just cut the crazy out of your life and move on... I learned my lesson dealing with CL folks coming to my house. Now if I'm selling something i keep it at my storage unit and have them meet me there.

No doubt your peace of mind is worth more than 400 bucks.

more of a matter of principle, he met me took the chair...then starts sending me insane messages that I ripped him off.

If he wrote me like a gentleman I wouldn't care. He's trying to act righteous and then it comes out that he broke the chair.

Maybe you should send the chair buyer a cease and desist letter

Always make your craigslist transaction in a public place. I'll never let someone come to my house and I'll never make a transaction without someone coming with me and packing heat.

Don't you live in a doorman building? Tell the doorman if he sees that dude to call the po po - it's what they're there for. Also tell your wife to NEVER list your shit without asking you. That's just messed up pure and simple! If I came home and my wife said she put my leather Manhattan cigar chair on CL she'd get a similar surprise the next day when all of her purses are missing.
