is this a landy?

Saw this picture in the NY Times today. Looks like a military-variant Rover, but not 100% sure. There are some Land Rover elements: headlight bezel, wheel arches...Any ideas?

Good question. It definitely has some distinctive LR characteristics. Those that you mentioned plus the frame/rear link that is visible, wheels & front bumper.

I really liked his combat boots!

Yes. Military spec.ed modifications. You see pix in the Land Rover mag.s all the time.
