Is beating a possum a crime?

I am told it is by my wife because it is a life. I was told to stop the dogs from barking, Houses are too close to fire a weapon, so I killed it with a fire poker. There was no way to win this battle. The sofa is calling me for the night.

If I only was Neil, I could hook up with a big shnoz chick right now. That would fix everything until the morning. I'm going with door number 2.

Growing up in louisiana and arkansas, as long as your state borders or is south of the mason dixon line, you can shoot things within a residential area. i would have gone with 22 caliber shorts myself.

You where legal most likely.

In New Jersey (Bergen County). There is a no-discharge ordinance (not even a pellet gun or a bow). I had issues with Possums and Gophers with my garden. I called the STATE up and I could legally trap them. Now here is the list of rules once trapped and you want to release them: http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/pdf/r...ion_policy.pdf

1. You cannot release them outside your town
2. You cannot release them on public property
3. Basically find a person who you dont like that has a lot of money in flowers and a big garden and release them there.

If you want to kill them:

1. Drowning is not legal
2. Shooting them in the head is legal as long as you do it inside your house
3. Hitting in head with a blunt object is legal as long as it is done with 1 hit.

Basically the state wants you to follow the humane society guidelines on dispatching an animal. The lady I talked to at the state only wanted to talk state laws even when those conflict with county laws.

She told me the fine is up to 10k for not dispatching correctly so I should be somewhat discreat about how I handle things.

I kinda feel sad to hurt an animal like that, I guess I got a soft side for em. I mean I'd kill em if I had to but if its just walking around I would probably just throw something at it to scare it away. Now if it was comming to attack me or my cat then thats different I'd definately kill it. A coon recently walked into my house a few weeks ago and hid underneath my tv stand, I threw my cat right next to it to scare it away, ran right out the front door, hehe.

You haven't dealt with a possum yet. You can knock it off the fence with a ball bat and 2 minutes later it will climb back up on the same spot and hiss at you. The things are ruthless oversized rats. I could care less about it but the dogs will bark as long as it is on the fence. It wont leave the area unless you kill it.

Found one of those f-ers hanging on my garage door track by it's tail when I was growing up...scared the crap out of me.

So I just opened the door :-)

He bailed quickly an I never saw it again...

I guess my yard is more appealing to them than your garage unfortunately. You can have them if you want.

I bought a new pellet gun this weekend. Took it over my friends place and we sat up in his tree stand to shoot squirrels. I couldn't bring myself to shoot them. I wound up shooting some shave cream cans and beer bottles instead.

Why not trap it and release it in the woods or something?

In theory it sounds good. Lets all go hug a tree and think about it some more.

Do they sell inhumane traps for mice? Its just a really big nasty rodent. Maybe the thing nips me and I become more rabid . I'll try ten pumps with the pellet gun next time.
