Intercooler comparisons

Here are some pictures of different intercooler upgrades I have worked with. Shows differences and some of the things that need to be overcome to make an upgrade happen.

The larger intercooler I have Allisport make is in the background. And the stage II Allisport can be shown next to the Australian one you guys have been buying on EBAY. The AUS one has thicker cores that are blocky and hassle airflow in my opinion. And the airflow gap is smaller as well. the AUS and Allisport stage II are the same size and not true full width intercooler IMO.

You can see the large section left with the smaller intercoolers around the intercooler intake and exit pipes. That has to be closed off to keep airflow from recirculating in the engine bay. The Shroud needs to be closed off as shown to keep air moving across the radiator.

I also show a larger radiator I make that butts up to the intercooler pipes and allows more cooling. And another picture of the external oil cooler I like to replace the restrictive oil cooler that is usually in a tank of the stock radiator.

Thanks for posting the pictures Jim. Makes what you were telling me over the phone much clearer than the mud I was dealing with. Is that a ball of sheep wool in the background ?

Steel wool. Has the same effect over me though.

Out of curiosity ...

What do you guys do with the crossbars that go in front of the radiator from the hood catch to the chassi when installing a big intercooler ?

Thanks

Pat

I already removed mine. I was reading Allisport and others websites and they all say you have to remove them.

I don't remove them! I move stuff around to make it fit with them. Hoods don't shut as well without those pieces installed. Or a replacement that curves out and covers the new addition. Some of the installation tricks I am going to keep to myself.

JP,

Question. In your pictures you show how the Au intercooler isn't full width. Does it make sense to move it as far to the left as possible and free up some air flow to the radiator ? Pointless ?

Then you put the tank for the intercooler in front of the radiator. Blocking flow. Its a compromise however you end up mounting it.
