India Excursion(s)

I learned very recently that I'll be in Delhi for several days towards the end of April and i would like to extend the trip if i can find a decent excursion. Ideally I would like to do a short overland excursion. Have any of you done something similiar recently? If so, any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Been a few years since I've been back but I've got a few folks I could ask. I did go to as good wildlife preserve a number of years ago but that was way down south.

Thanks P. Not exactly the most relaxing area on the globe but hate to go that far and not experieince something other than the city. We'll see what the area has to offer during that HOT season. Wonder where TaTa is setting up their manufacturing plants? Maybe I can bring back a CKD(?) kit with me.

I think the manufacturing is being done a bit farther south near the town of Pune. Steve Hoare went there last year and wrote an article for LRO.

I spent a week in New Delhi for work a few years back. The only side trip you NEED to do is to the Taj Mahal. Hire a car to take you there and back. Should be about $150 or so. I booked a trip and ended up with really bad food poisoning and had to cancel it. Biggest regret was not seeing the Taj.

On that note, you might be tempted to eat street food, but AVOID it!

What hotel are you staying at? The Taj Palace is the main westerner hotel and where I stayed. Once you get in to town, take note of the US Embassy location. While New Delhi is relatively safe, there have been some recent incidents - check the State Department website. Avoid going out after dark.

The Red Fort is worth a visit, as are the numerous temples and markets in the area.

I found an AWESOME Indian restaurant near the US Embassy...it's called Lazeez Affaire.

There is actually a good Irish pub in the basement of the ITC Maurya hotel next to the Taj Palace.

The train museum is ghetto, but interesting.

Can't speak to Delhi but I just came back from Bangalore. If this is your first time over there, can list some suggestions on "prep" to get you through...

Clay, feel free to give me a call if you want some suggestions. Flights are cheap within India - I go fairly often and always gravitate back towards Darjeeling and Kalimpong (West Bengal) or Gangtok (Sikkim). You could go out and back to Delhi in a few days and have a blast.

Jeff, thanks, I meant to mention this to you offline as I know you are very familiar with this area of the world. Maybe I can buy you a beer next week?

Sounds like Jeff is your guy to talk to. He's going to have more recent info than what I have access to.

While it isn't near, I have always wanted to do the little Darjeeling Himalayan Railway up the mountain.
is a low-polygon 3D rendition that features many VR Land Rover series trucks.
