Importing to the US from Dubai

Morning Guys,

I recently bought a 97 NAS D90 (SALDV3248VA129943) in Dubai and when we leave there in a couple of years the intention is to bring it back to the USA with us.

Is anyone familiar with the process that can give me any tips or advice?

Many thanks.

Hi,

Having some friends working in Dubai, I looked into this a couple of months ago:

1. Your car needs to have been produced (manufacture date) before September 1st 1997. Your chassis number: VA129943 might be on the cusp of that, would contact Land Rover Traceability (Egan Pagan) and ask them for the manufacture date.

2. Check for DOT (white, on the left side of the drivers footwell) and a EPA (black, in the inner part of bonnet/hood) stickers. If these are present, then you are golden. Most, if not all, of the Japan spec [and thats what your VIN suggests] D90s do not have a DOT sticker, as it was removed prior to shipping to Japan/UAE.

3. If you do not have these stickers, but your date of manufacture is still before 9/1/1997, you will be able to import it with the help of a Registered Importer.

4. If you plan to import it >25 year post manufacture date, none of the above matters.

Good luck,

Francisco

Chicosalgueiro has given you the correct information. You will have to use a Registered Importer. A list of them with contacts, broken down by states, is available on NHTSA.gov. With a confirmed build date prior to 9/1/97 and a RI you will be good to go. Good luck.

Why do you write NAS ? it's obviously not NAS spec if it was you wouldn't need registered importer.

What does it matter? The guy is looking for advice/help. This whole NAS matter is absolute nonsense. The difference between the NAS and the Japan/Dubai cars is negligible and this is why they received the import eligibility number by NHTSA. The FMVSS list for these cars is very specific and if the guy can be given some help in facilitating the import of his car then we are glad to help. I don't care if he calls it a NAS or not - just as long as it is not called a Jeep.

I have no real input to this Gareth, but to say that I'd seriously considering re-selling your 90 here before you leave. I'm sure you have seen the price of D's skyrocket here in the land of the AMG Benz and other high end autos.

No offense to our home market...but there is more $$$ over here-unless of course you fall in love with the truck, and I can't fault that!

Are you on the Facebook, specifically the UAE LR owner site?

He doesn't that is bad information. An RI is only required if the vehicle isn't 25 and doesn't conform and a bonded entry is required while the vehicle is brought up to spec- think of Tom Cruises issues in Rain Man. I went and met with DOT early on about registering but decided not to open a shop to do compliance work.
Land Rover North America got caught with a bunch of NAS spec 90's that Solihull cranked out after or weren't on US soil by the 97 model year cutoff @ the end of August 97. The trucks were considered 98 model year by DOT so Land Rover sold the trucks into Japan (lhd trucks sold into a rhd market) and Saudi/UAE etc since they couldn't come here without airbags which were required for the 98 model year. Many of the trucks were tarted up with power windows etc so they would sell in those markets.
Some of the trucks have VIN's dating to August 97 and can come here. Unfortunately a bunch of them have had the left foot well decal/and or the "this vehicle conforms to all federal standards as of the date of manufacture" defaced or even removed which makes import here a very difficult proposition. To be clear, they are NAS trucks, and originally had the decals indicating this. DOT has an exact list of the VIN's eligible for entry as stated above.

The VIN number has a much later build date than officially imported Defenders.

I don't follow the market all that closely to give real #'s (but will look) & to be fair my comment was based off an estimate for where the market is going, prices for all D's shot up as production ended (bear in mind I can walk into several places here and get a heritage model Defender off the showroom). Since I got here I was keeping my eyes out for cheap importable ROW trucks, those are nearly nonexistent when we are talking 'cheap.'

Folks here pay a premium for image.

Let's see, 1997 + 25 years = 2022.
Why are we even having this discussion?
A '97 isn't even close to being being in the correct time frame of being 25 years old ??

I was responding to Viton who thinks it needs to be 25 years old. The details of the NAS import requirements have already been spelt out in detail above.

Hello All,

I just purchased a 1997 Defender 110 3.5 V8 in the UAE as well.

VIN: SALLDHMV8VA138193
Engine: 24G17553B

How do I know if it is eligible to be shipped to the US or at least how do I find the production month of the car.
