Importing D90 from Europe. Questions.

Hi guys, just joined this forum! I'm in Southern Cal. I have had my eye on the D90 model for a while. Love the body style! I have had mostly Wranglers in the past and really want to give one of these a try. I don't mind a rough ride.

Anyways the prices for the older models seem to be really high. Here in California they fetch quite a bit. I guess the (soft top) models get more from what I can tell. I am still learning about the different model options.

I have a relative in Spain that could possibly help me acquire an older model (1980's to 1990's) D90 if I want. It looks like these are fairly common trucks over there and quite a bit cheaper.

From what I have read online it looks like shipping to the US is going to set me back around $3K roughly plus import fee's, DMV, etc.

If I decide to pursuit this route do you guys have any recommendations and or things to look out for? I know the model has to be (25 years) or older to get it into the country without a hassle.

Is it smog exempt once it's here? California is pretty tough on smog laws.

If I need to get it repaired what am I looking at cost wise at the local Rover mechanic? I can do some of the work myself but if a rebuild is needed what's it going to set me back? Worst case scenario?

There seem to be some nice models at good prices in different parts of Spain and luckily my friend can help identify a nice one for me and assist in getting it shipped. That really helps.

Anyways, thanks guys for any advice you have. I am really excited to get into one of these!

You really need to use the search function. This has been covered hundreds of times and you won't like what you will find.

Contact us or Doug Crowther for accurate information on costs to import to the west coast, and the challenges presented by California...

Lots of pain and heartache from California non NAS Defender owners, especially diesel owners. Good luck and consider moving to a free state or buying an North Anerican Spec Defender.

If anyone here is from Arizona and owns an older model D90 I would like to hear from you. We are planning to head towards Arizona in the near future because of work and I would like to find out if AZ is a possibility for importing a D90 legally and getting it on the road. Better option to wait until we move I think. I can line up a nice one in Spain and store it there if needed. Next year will allow the 1991 model so that's always a plus.
