importing 24 year old car

I have a 1988 Land Rover in Europe. Following the 25 year rule I should be able to import and register it in 2013.

You can also bring in any car in the US and drive it on foreign plates for a maximum period of 12 months. After that it has leave the country.

I was wondering now. Would it be possible to bring in the car in 2012 (24 year old), have it for a year on foreign plates and just before the 12 month period expires, officially import and register it ?

Johan, read through this. Pretty good info in there. I think the same truck was discussed at length on ExPo as well.

You can drive it legally on foreign plates (with insurance), but if you get stopped by a US cop, don't expect them to know the law, or believe you are legal. I made it across the US with English plates, but I had all my docs, a printout of the relevant law and an email from my insurance company to back up the insurance card, just in case I had to dance with the bear.

And what Doug said.

I'm not sure how the rules work where you live, but in my jurisdiction you would have a very difficult time getting the state to issue a title if you could not produce a current registration with your application for title. The DMV here requires a CURRENT registration coupled with a bill of sale to establish ownership. An expired registration is not satisfactory proof of ownership, and they'll make you get a bonded title, which is a huge pain.

BTW, I was pulled over in Denver for speeding with UK plates, I produced registration papers and the cop couldn't have cared less about the plates. He was far more interested in getting $150 from me.

In absence of a Current V5 you can use a Permanent Exportation Certificate

DLVA will issue that to you and mail it to USA at no charge if the V5 is not present

His screen name Quick128 is because his police interceptor is car #128-thinking the heavy oil 110 would loose that one

I think a radar detector in a defender is an oxymoron. Maybe it is put in well built trucks....

These almost ended up in my personal impound lot. It's a good thing I like Doug! I could have just shot him and thrown him over the gaurdrail...
