Cool Importing 1990 D90 from Greece with replacement of same motor ok?

Hello,
I have imported a few 97-2000 Defenders to Canada, no problems.
I am looking at a 1990 Defender 90 in Greece (am here now). The stock 3.9L V8 and manual transmission was replaced with the same spec 3.9L V8 motor and transmission.

Is this ok to import into USA New York or will the serial number not match and it will be rejected?

Much appreciated.

Something sticks out at me immediately.
I don't think the 3.9 V8 was seen in the Defender until the NAS version. I'm pretty sure it was 3.5 until the NAS versions arrived. So 1990 is way to early for a 3.9 so yours is not powered by the correct unit.
Can anyone confirm or correct me on this?

Early 1992 the 3.9 was fitted to the Defender in the UK, not sure about ROW

I know this as I bought (or the company did) a new 110 Defender on a K reg and it had the new (old) lump in it.

You need do some research on that one. Maybe the plenum has a Crack in it and needs changing

Decode the vin number, it will tell you what it was from the factory.

Verify the VIN configuration - replacement engine of the same type are not grounds for denial of entry as the engine SN is not required for import. Conversion or reconfiguration to a different engine type (volume or fuel type) is grounds for denial of entry.

Excellent. I will let you know what the VIN reads. It seems A lot of these early defenders in Greece (and only Greece...) have the V8 5.9 from stock.

So on the note of reconfiguration, a 1989 Defender 90 with the 2.5l Turbo Diesel, then replaced with a 300TDi would be denied? (Have my eyes on one in Italy)

Into the USA - yes. Vehicle is not an antique/vintage any longer as it has been modified significantly. Into BC is a whole other story.

You can email me directly as we have some experience importing to Canada as well as the US.

We bought a MINT 1989 110 in Greece, original owner only 74,000km. It has the v8. The other one we wanted had the 3.9L V8 swap up from 3.5l... I was worried they would figure out and decline it , would they?

If the block was changed to a 3.9 I doubt it would be a problem. As far as I know they look the same on the outside. What would be a problem is if you went from a carbureted 3.5 to a 3.9. I would consult with your broker to be sure, but that is my guess. I know I can't tell the difference between a 4.0 and a 4.6 without looking at the crank. I assume the same would go for a 3.5/3.9/4.2.
