Importation Laws

Has anybody imported a vehicle under the 2010 Temporary Vehicle Importation Guidelines. Specifically, the Nonresident of the United States guideline.

NONRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
A vehicle registered in a country other than the United States may be imported for personal use by a non-resident of the United States for a period not to exceed one year. The vehicle cannot be sold while in the United States and must be exported within one year from the date of entry. This period cannot be extended under any circumstances. The importerís passport number and the name of the country that issued the passport must be supplied on the HS-7 Declaration form. Use Box 5 on the HS-7 Declaration form.

HS-7 seems pretty straight forward. I do have questions for those that have done this or are doing this. Can you just drive to Canada or Mexico and re-import every year using the same HS-7 Declaration form or will you run into problems like living in a country on a tourist visa after you've been there for 6 months and try to leave and come back right away? Have you had any issues with insurance if the primary driver isn't the person the vehicle is registered to.

Thanks.

Matt,
Nope. VIN is tracked. There is also a "signifigant" bond posted to make sure you take the vehicle back out of the country.

By vin being tracked do you mean that you can't just take it out of country for a day and bring it back?

From what I understand the vehicle has to leave the country for a minimum period of 6 months. This is what a friend of mine in LA informed me. (don't know if its accurate)

------ Follow up post added February 13th, 2011 12:37 PM ------

Doug, if you post the bond, i presume you get the money back when the truck is exported?

Normally the bond is just a hold on a credit card. Not sure of the dates, but a friend in Canada had to have his vehicle out of the United States for I think 6 months + 1 day after having it here for a year.

Yeah. That's about what I was looking for. Six months is too long to have not just to have for one year.

Then import two. Import one now, and one in 6 months, and switch back and forth. Orrrrrr, import an '85 or older and be done with it.

Yeah there is another loophole for exhibit or event trucks. Same deal post bond refunded on exit.

Somebody mentioned I should stop being a Munson and get a new one using this method as I have a permanent tie. I wasn't sure it would work due to the fact that you can't do it with a girlfriend on a tourist visa. And it can't. It's ok... I was just trying to scheme to get a 0 mileage 110.

buy a 0 mile 110 in the UK and swap out the vin tags with a junk 110 83/84 ( available from about 100 GBP ). Get a UK MOT and import it.

Yeah. That sounds totally legal. Despite that fact that reputable places have said they'd do this for me, I will not.

Be interested to know where you have seen these vehicles at £100, the last donor truck I brought cost me £2000, and they rarely sell for less than £1500. Your in cloud cuckoo land mate. Also if your going down that road you need to retain the chassis and rebuild it and then build the newer truck onto it. Also this vehicle must be trailered in the UK because now its only legal for export.

I'm not likely to take this route although I've seen quite a few salvage LR's at auction with damage for minuscule amounts ... I defer to your experience of actually doing this for real.

Surely the vehicle could be driven on trade plates even if its for export only?

No I checked, not legal, to use trade plates the vehicle must conform.

Julian, whatever you bring over, put a real engine in it. Something like a nice twin turbo LS2 (see pic). Then when you take it home with its 900 or so ponies lined up under your right toenail.....you'll really impress them on the A10.
