I'm thinking of life/career changes and would love some fresh perspective! Thoughts?

So I'm in between jobs. Working on my own again (owned my own boatyard and Euro/Brit auto tech shop since 1998.) I love it, but working for myself is not great for me and I am a happier person working for someone.

Looking for a "different" position for the winter or longer term. Love to travel (I lived in New Zealand for a winter a few years back) I'm not finding it easy to locate a travel type job. Considered working as crew/mechanical crew on a large yacht or cruise liner - but wouldn't mind staying land based. Anyway, does anyone have thoughts on a cool direction I should go? Always interested in other peoples perspective.

Yes I'm married - 15 years and still strong. We both travel a lot independently and a distance job could work if the situation was structured well.

No kids or other constraints that prevent some job opportunities.

Have a ton of practical skills, sales experience with high end yacht/auto clients.

Get along with anyone who isn't a total douch-bag.

Cheers!
Doug

Start by making a list of acceptable jobs or careers. Do this everyday for a week, on Sunday scratch off the ones that don't make sense. If needed do it again. Then take the top 10 ideas and hone them down to 5. Then put a plan in place to connect, or get introduced to those industries, contacts or companies. A referral will open a door much quicker than other channels.

The clearer you are about what you want to do, be or become, the luckier you will find yourself. Luck favors the prepared.

Last one: Luck is the intersection of preparation and opportunity.

1) I think we are on the cusp of a real and overdue surge of light duty diesel vehicles in the ver near future. 2) Plus the fact that import Defenders will start flooding the eastern seaboard in next few years and 3) there is a major void in knowledgeable mechanics with experience in Land Rover diesels in this country (to included independent shops) tells me there is plenty of opportunity as a TDI mechanic.

Yes - ECR - I've talked with Mike but I'm not willing to relocate only 2 hours away. It just doesn't make sense. I know that sounds odd considering I'd possibly move to Colorado or New Zealand....

Thanks for the ideas and the thoughts. It's always good to get some outside perspective.

Keep it coming please while I start making lists as above!

Cheers
Doug

Military - I'm too old, I doubt they'd be to keen on 40ish boatbuilder, carpenter, mechanic, electrician, sales and marketing odd-ball.

My brother is a Navy Doc - he's got that avenue covered.

If crewing on a mega is what you think you want to do, go to the Lauderdale boat show later this month. There were always crew headhunters circulating that specialize on supplying crew for mega yachts. The whole show is mega yacht oriented.

Getting a visa for NZ is very difficult. Very cool place tough. Spent lots of time there while I lived down under.

Clean up your web presence before you start looking for a job. We had an interview scheduled with a guy and then I googled him and found all these youtube videos of him wanting to be a white rapper. We called him back and canceled the interview. The internet and college kids are a dangerous combination.

Ask yourself these questions and then act...

What are you more afraid of than anything in the whole world?

What would you do if you knew you were going to die in three months?

What would be the last thing that you would do?

What would you do if fear were not a factor or if money were not a factor?

Agreed... I'd hate to not be hired for an unrelated job because someone didn't like my photography.

Music is an art, just because someone doesn't succeed at it is no reason for not hiring them.

What ever is in your system, you clearly need to get it out.

Sounds like being a nomadic Mechanic (LR or Not) might be the thing for you. How about heading south for winter? Then move on somewhere else when the spirit moves you?
