I'm no car designer but...

what's the deal with making every car look the same - here is the new evoque next to the new mini paceman - are all the cars being designed by a handful of like minded individuals or is there some new iphone app that takes any interesting design and turns it into generic mush

There is only one designer and it's called the government. Doesn't matter which sovereignty. Fuel economy and safety standards are making autos a one design prospect.

They are both rovers! Yes, I know that BMW now owns the mini, but it started off a rover!

Design goes way beyond just esthetics. Design factors in overall reliability, quality, cost of ownership, etc., where public perception or not, Mini wins hands down. Hence a huge reason they hold their value better (in category or out). Those two cars do look similar and judging by the success of the Evoque, they have resurrected the once popular sport utility coupe design. This might even help the lift the slow sales of the BMW X6 which the Evoque borrowed some lines from.

I am pretty sure, there was another, not politically correct, name for the Freelander...
