Icon4x4... why isn't someone doing this with Defenders?

icon4x4.com

I am just wandering why someone hasn't started doing this sort of thing with the defenders? These trucks START at 80k and go up from there?!?! I am sure I am missing something here, but I wander why someone hasn't gone into the "celebrity" 4x4 market with the Defenders?

Well, there is this tiny little shop called ECR, that has/does build trucks for celebs. Wasn't sure if you heard about them yet.

80K isn't that much for a well built truck.

You can still buy new defenders so you don't need to recreate them ...

Just out of curiosity, what celebs own defenders? That are known anyways.

If you read the ideals proposed by Jonathan Ward at Icon he is essentially trying to "improve" on the original utilitarian design and ideals of the original trucks, ie better engine, drivetrain, 4 wheel discs, coil sprung suspension, etc. etc. The "design" and look of the truck is otherwise very, very similar and that was his point.

With the D90 you already have many of the "upgrades" that Icon is putting into their trucks; Good chassis, coil sprung suspension, engine and drivetrain. No doubt they can all be improved.

I would be careful to say that ECR is the "Icon" of the D90's. Their similarities are the compulsive attention to detail and "getting it right". The differences are that ECR is trying to stay as true to OEM as possible (restoration) while Icon has had to "improve" on the OEM (reproduction). But essentially Icon HAD to in order to even compete with the D90 in terms of features.

I would LOVE for someone to "gently" redesign the D90 and create something even MORE utilitarian and simplify that ridiculous dash. I wouldn't change anything else. Why would you??

I agree.
Here is what I have said about Icons in previous threads:

"Originally Posted by ECR:

TLC stuff is cool and anybody that makes it in this business gets my respect.

Our stuff is all Rover with a lot of original flavor in mind, even though we do custom stuff we always like to keep the overall look and feel of something that could have come out of the factory.

The TLC Icons are a new build that uses all US running gear with the look of an older vehicle. Super cool for sure, but I don't really see much overlap between TLC and ECR.

If we built an Icon it would have a Tdi, galv frame, etc etc.
If TLC built a Defender it would have a GM V8, 9" axles and such.

Nothing wrong with either vehicle, they just appeal to different folks.

A good number of our customers also have FJ40 Icons in their stables. "

Everything I have read says that the Defender will no longer be produced as of 2013 and Land Rover will redesign it to comply with all the safety standard around the world.

I would guess this would mean that it is going to suck... but I will give them the benefit of the doubt...

I should have a bit more clear in my post. The OP'er stated why didn't someone get in on the celeb market. I really wasn't saying ECR did an ICON type of build, I should've worded my reply differently.

I never believe anything I read with regard to defender being redesigned ... it's generally wishful thinking by people in the US hoping to get a brand new defender via their local dealer.

Now Land Rover is owned by TATA I think we'll see defenders around for the next 50 years ...

Anyway the world is going to end in 2012 to it's a mute point anyway! ;-)

I would think there would be copyright infringements too if Icon tried to redo the Defender since it is still in production.

They should redo the Series I. Now I would buy that!

Tata can never recreate a NAS defender that would be worthwhile unless they used all the original parts and molds from 94/95/97.

edit: and galvanized all those parts

Anyone know more about the paint/powdercoat finish they use? It looks very cool and would probably look great on a Series truck.

John

Just drive over and ask.

They also do some amazing factory correct restorations if you do not want an Icon

Ill do that next time ive got a spare $100k laying around. In the meantime the finish kind of looks like my series flat OD green but Im sure much more durable than a rattle can from Tower.
