I was doing about 80 in the far left lane of I96 in Detroit. I looked away for a split second, then looked back.

I saw what appeared to be a tire flying towards my head. I ducked under the dash and WHAM!.

Pulled over to side of the road to inspect what I thought would be a broken headlight, some rubber marks, and a dent or two. After all, it was just a tire.

In fact, it was a wheel and tire off of an old Taurus headed in the opposite direction. That thing must have been doing 60mph.

Troopers found the wheel, and the Taurus had made it 2 miles!!! on a brake rotor. No driver in sight.

Got to love Detroit.

more pics..

That sucks! You were obviously lucky that it didn't come through the windscreen.

Too bad you don't have a full wraparound brushbar. Probably would have been bad anyway. Thank God for insurance! A few years ago I had something strange like that happen to me. A power line dropped down into the road right in front of me. Shattered the windshield, sheared off all 4 top Hellas. If it hadn't been for the front cage, would have decapitated me and my wife.....

Your lucky, a few years ago, we had a tire fly off a truck then fly into a Wendys parking lot and kill some poor guy walking in for breakfast... Those things are like missles when they come off a car or truck.

I fly for a major airline. A few years back one of our planes lost a tire as the plane lifted off. It went under a parked airplane and hit a belt loader. The solid steel belt loader was shaped like the letter "U" from the impact (150 mph +). It just missed two rampers who were up-loading freight onto the plane.
It just goes to show that you never know!

You should have seen the look on the faces of the guys who painted the truck.

The truck was flatbedded to their shop after the accident. They restore old Ferraris and cars of that nature, as well as contemporary luxury cars.

It spent almost 3 months in the shop. Completley dissasmbled and taken down to metal. Each piece individually coated and painted, front and back, then assembled and riveted. 3 new doors, stainless bolts, new tire carrier, and any piece with any corrosion was replaced.

They were just shy of angry at me this morning when I stopped by to give them the keys. If anyone can return it to its proper condition, its these guys. But they asked me not to drive it anymore once its finished.

It'll take about a month to fix.

Question

Mazen,

Sorry to hear about your truck. Question - do you know where you/your guys will get the left front outer panel from? I've been wanting to replace mine for a while - mine has the side light installed in the wrong location (located for a 94 as opposed to a 97 when they replaced it) . Thanks!

I assume the shop will get it from Land Rover...

They are associated with a Land Rover dealer here in MI

Paul, have you tried Rovers Down South. I'm sure he has a D90 fender for you. Just a thought.

Man, that sucks. I had mine wrecked earlier this year by an idiot. Makes you wanna cry. It loosk like the damage is limited to the wing. Was anything else hurt? As someone else said, I wonder how a full ARB would have fared. At those speeds, probably not much better.

I was thinking that a full bar may have defelcted the tire into the windshield. So far, its just the front quarter and a few odds and ends.
