how to title a 110 V8 in CA?

We have sold a Defender 110 V8 to a customer in Cali, but he is afraid he is not being able to get a registration for the car there and that this will end up in a divorce

I have tried to find info on the net and here on the forum, but can not find anything regarding smog tests etc.

I have read all the sagas here on the forum, but that all refurred to a diesel car.

What does he have to do to obtain fresh tags?

Please help thank you!

Being a petrol motor, DMV will want you to go to a CARB station for emissions compliance.

The customer should move to a free state.

before your out of state rover can be registered in ca.... it needs to be titled in another state for two yrs.... once the 2yrs are over the rover becomes 49 state compliant... hence california complaint....

ca. will not accept a fob rover.... or a fob rover with with a less than two year old out of state title.....

california is not a defender friendly state!

I'll rent them a closet with an address for a month at my apt. complex in Eugene, Oregon, just long enough to claim residency. Registrations in Eugene have no emissions testing and first reg's are good for two years! Done! Pm for details. If they're a fed fishing I'll know in New York minute. Pic is of my new to me P38 that I registered in Eugene November of 2014. As you can see it's good for two years. All they do is a visual vin to pink.

Would assume that if you had an accident or it was stolen while in Kali, that your insurance might have an issue with" principal place of garaging" and hold off payment while it investigates where you really live.
They would look for where you vote, paycheck address, utilities copies of check etc to prove where you live.
Which probably say Kali not Eugene.

I'd bet they would. But a person doesn't necessarily re register their vehicle when they move to another state until their old tags expire. Therefor they could register, have the tags good for two years, satisfy the reg., all while living in California or wherever they want to. This is just a hypothetical solution to a stated problem. I've got no skin in this. Just an idea. "I'm just spit ballin' here, it ain't all gold!" ;-)

Doesn't CA require that if you are working in the state for something like 6 months or more you must get a CA DL and register your cars there too? At least that was the law when I was stationed there 10 years ago.

Couldn't say. I have a house in CA but don't work there so I'd have to look into that, but there is no shortage of unenforced laws on the books in CA.

Funny I live in NYC but garage the Defender in my garage in Hoboken, NJ. Before I switched my license and insurance to NYC a few years ago I called the insurance company and said that the primary residence of my vehicle would be in NJ even though my residence would be/is NYC, and they said it's need to be insured in NJ. Funny though you can't have a vehicle insured in one state without a residence in that state either. They told me to find a way. Sometimes you need to do what you have to do to keep life moving.

CA only gives you 10 days to switch registration after you move into the state ... 10 days!! It's insane. This state is insane. I'd be out of here, but this little surf town we call home is just too fun to leave.

Side question: what is the most defender friendly state??
