On the point of VIN tampering due to chassis replacement, has there not been a precedent set by the recall of Toyota trucks for replacement frames due to rust? This was I believe a Federally mandated safety recall and it affected millions of vehicles - which are now on our roads with "tampered" VINs.
There is a significant difference between a federal safety recall performed by the manufacturer and an unidentified person someone sticking a galvy chassis under a truck that obfuscates the definitive identity of the vehicle.

If Land Rover had performed a fully documented chassis swap in the UK I would suspect that LRNA would be able to confirm the identity. If the chassis is of unknown provenance they can't and thus the questions arise.

Guessing Big Red is still behind locked gates at a secret location?

Just read the article and you are truly a 600lb. gorilla killa! Great work you're doing, both the effort and the results thus far, in already accomplishing the return of the first 6 of, I'm sure many, beloved trucks! In my book, your "pay it forward" pro bono account is forever full! If you're ever this way, you can have at the valley in my 90, albeit you might want a driver if your going to be "tasting!"

I shouldn't have read that article. The whole civil forfeiture business is nasty.

Will sent me a text with the link to the article while I was driving today.

My first impression was that it was so well written and makes LRNA and DHS look like such asses, I asked if he wrote the article for the author....

That's funny! As I was reading it, I was thinking the exact same thing! It read as way too knowledgeable to be written by today's caliber of journalist.

I cannot take any credit for writing the article. The author, Patrick George, was very thorough in his research and investigation. He has contacted me several times since my initial interview near the beginning of January simply to do fact checks. I really am very pleased with how his article turned out! He did a thoroughly great job!

Same here, and not just from clients! I understand that the article is "trending" this morning. That's a good thing, right?

Big Red is still in an undisclosed location. DHS Special Agent Nameless has stopped answering my emails regarding its status.

Now that this thread is back up, we should make sure to remember our roots. Remember why we know anything about the difference between 90s/110s/127s and Defenders.

Thank you Harrie, you are missed. RIP

There is no such thing as a 25 year old Defender. Not till next year. The first Defender rolled off the production line in 1990. What your importing is, or should be, a 1984-1989 Land Rover Ninety or One-Ten or One-Two-Seven.

The name changed to 110 and 90 sometime between about 1988 I think. The Nineties and One-Tens had the pencil lock door tops inside the cab and the flat black plastic inner door handles, the Range Rover four spoked steering wheel and often outer recessed door handles like a Series and from about 1984-1986 the angled sliding cab windows with round spin lock on.

They also will have at first had 2.25 petrol and diesel 5 main bearing engines and then 2.5 Diesel and Petrol non turbos and then the turbo 19j engines till 1990. The TDI was released in 1990 though many were retro fitted.

Please be vigilant. A 25 year old Defender does not exist.
Thank you and good luck I joined for the sole purpose of helping by supplying info from
The home country!

Thank you.

In particular, I would like to point to the portion of the letter that states as follows:

"Under a long-standing line of interpretations of this agency, the substitution of a new body on a used chassis alone does not result in the creation of a "new" motor vehicle subject to the FMVSS, assuming that the vehicle continues to be titled and registered with its original model year. Thus, under the scheme you outline, the 1967-75 Land Rover with a different body and unmodified chassis could be imported without the need to conform it to the FMVSS."

It appears to me that US Customs has been executing inspection of vehicles in a manner that is inconsistent and in opposition to the actual guidelines it is supposed to follow. Under the interpretation above, replacement of non-chassis components should not render a vehicle ineligible for import under the 25-year import rule.

I'd like to thank Ron Brown (evilfij) for directing me to where I could find this information.
wow, great find!
