I apologize if this is not the right thread to be discussing this. I've posted a similar question in the other recently started thread.

To put this one to bed, you need to get FIRM unassailable documentation that the vehicle was imported as a 1984 (not the 1986 he says on Ebay) into the USA with the original 2.5L petrol engine. The build date appears to be a 83-84. So the owner needs to show that it came in clean and that he added the 200TDI, new doors and modified the axles to Disc brakes from drum, etc. Here is the CalVIN:

SAL Manufacturer code: Land Rover
LD Model: Defender (for early models: Ninety, or One Ten)
V Wheel base: 92.9 inch, but designated 90
A Body type: 2-door: Pickup, hood cab, truck cab, or soft/hard top
C Engine type: 2.5 litre diesel (model 12J)
8 Steering and transmission: Left-hand drive (LHD), 5-speed manual (LT85, LT77, LT77S, R380 or other)
A Model year: 1983, 1984
A Assembly location: Solihull, UK
XXXXXX Serial number

I suspect people are going to be dumping suspicious cars left and right now. Good for legit cars, bad overall for the price of questionable cars. Lots of people are going to be taken to the cleaners on Ebay!

Yes and no. I have seen trucks with an A date date code in the VIN that were built later than 84. There are reasons Rover went bankrupt several times and had to be nationalized, and all forms of record keeping was @ the top of the list. Land Rover's record keeping in the 70's and 80's has been likened to a plate of runny eggs.
Again a simple carfax should reflect the pertinent details.

This has been going on for a year or so. Casually looking for a 110, I have talked to several sellers who have come clean on why they are unloading. It takes the right questions and research. And you can guess what was the common denominator....

If it were me.... Inspect the chassis VIN (or ask for good photos) to make sure it matches the brake booster plate and looks legit. Get a carfax to check import date. Get the build date via email from the Heritage trust. Make sure the two dates are greater than 25 years apart.

Common sense is an oxymoron of the highest order.

You can add to that any truck built on a Friday after lunch was most likely done in a drunken haze... ok, pretty much any day after lunch... all them numbers & letters look the same
