Look at it like a gun... The body of the gun is what has the serial number on it... You can change the grips.. The slide..the trigger.. Add a silencer, shorten the barrel..port it etc etc... But the frame is the gun.. You change that..it's no longer the gun... You file the number down and you have a completely new set of problems..lol...

A little while ago this was stated...just to clarify..

However, Will, there is one issue in the VIN decoder that you posted that needs clarifying.

There is a grey area concerning the letter confirming the model year.

There is no hard and fast rule concerning the letter 'A' on (Def) 90 / 110's.

The letter 'A' can start in 1983 (the first Def appeared in March 1983) and continue until 1987 (one year into the TD).

So, any truck between 1983 and 1987 with an 'A' year in the VIN is OK.

For the letters 'C' and 'D', I've not come across any. The letter 'B', yes.

I'm interested in the 'new body change' not being an issue. This is contrary to what I was told last year.

Keep up the good work.

Alan.

The vin decoder I have for the uk vins says that the letter A is up to and including 1984 model years.. And then in 1995 the uk codes skipped N,O,P,Q,R and S... And then it came on line with the USA (worldwide) standard codes..O is probably skipped anyway so as not to be confused with zero..same as I..

Toyota recalled and replaced a bunch of Tacoma chassis due to rust. I don't think anyone is contending that those Tacomas are no longer the same vehicle. At the dealer we replaced a DII chassis that was bent in a crash. Same idea.

Yes.. But doesn't that have to be identified in a disclosure.. Kinda like when they had to replace an odometer.. What frame number did they use on the tacos and the d2..??

New frames doesn't have a number. Even when zinc plated.
I just type them in.
In doubt of the origin, the DOT will ask for the old VIN with the separated part of the old frame.
That's it in Gemany.
Different country, different laws.

ps: want to get the 1000 too!

Forgot to mention:

The VIN in the title has to match the VIN inside the frame!
If it doesn't match, the vehicle doesn't belong to the title!

Agree. I almost think with Defenders you can look at the frame as just a big part. You can think of it as a LT230 - instead of 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 etc gearing you have 2.5/200tdi, V8 motor, 300tdi motor mounts.

The Rover Shop - I see what you mean about the gun comparison but I don't think the body of a gun rusts out quite like a Defender frame can. If Defender frames came from the factory galvanized and without a bunch of pockets to hold moisture I'd say sure. But the bulkhead and frames of these seem to rot faster than anything else.
