Well I'm not shocked or terrified.

I'm furious and I pay taxes and vote.

DHS deserves to run out of money if this is how they spend it violating citizens civil liberties instead of providing any homeland security.
Way to prioritize what is important, and what a completely unjustifiable use of my taxes dollars. There are so many incredibly higher priority concerns in front of these people and they chase this based on completely errant information.

This isn't a liberal/conservative issue. This is our government surveilling and persecuting (they freely admit)
innocent Americans.

Personally I'd like to shine a magnifying glass on this portion of what has happened in hopes that some of the blogs that have covered this story pick up on this point and fire some citizens up. This is a government agency running roughshod over citizens , and infringing on their rights with no sense of propriety, or even due process. This has virtually nothing to do about vehicles in my book, but rather a run away agency.

The US Attorney for the Eastern District of NC should be embarrassed as hell. Talk about a black mark on your record. This is far more news worthy than most of the drivel on the natl news most evenings.

Call or write your congressmen, its their job to jump in on complete bullshit like this. Lets bring some pressure to bear on the perpetrators.

I'm sorry to sound insensitive but I'm having a hard time understanding something. On any given day there's about 30 to 40 illegal immigrants waiting to be picked up for labour work in my neighbourhood without worries. Their children are going to public schools, shopping with food stamps, and getting free medical attention with my tax dollars but the FEDS and several agencies prefer hunting Land Rover 90's and 110's. We're putting the wrong people into offices.

I agree fully on everything you just said. I pay taxes and I'm not allowed to vote! Taxation without representation.

True and it was a deliberate decision. The US is the only country that I know of that will tax citizens living abroad. That means that if I chose to move home permanently I would have to pay US tax for the rest of my life. Hence, a visitor or "legal alien". Sorry for the hijack, don't encourage me.

You may find this...... ironic, funny....I don't know.....something! But, I found out on Friday that the supervisor for the DHS Office here in Raleigh actually owns a Defender.

I would have but he didn't have it at the office on Friday when I was there. I was told by the agent I was working with that day that his supervisor owned a Defender.

Guess someone could go stake out the DHS office.....

"
I would just assume it was business as normal except that our elected officials changed the laws after 9/11 allowing the feds to spy even more than they did.

I first knowingly ran across them back in 1971 when a couple with a baby moved in down the street from me. I quickly made friends with them and became their primary baby sitter. That plus frequently visiting. Not long after my friends moved in another couple moved in to the house next door. The new folks were not social and declined invitations from various neighbors to come over for dinner, and parties. The did spend a lot of time out in the yard gardening. A couple years later my friends moved away. Right afterwords the neighbors who kept to themselves moved out as well. We learned from the person who owned the house they were renting that the house to the FBI. I think all my neighbors and I have FBI files as a result of a couple years of surveillance. And it was all because my friends had been active in the Toronto anti draft movement. once their baby was born they moved back into the US. He found work as a cabinet maker and she stayed home as a housewife.

Undercover federal surveillance, what else is new? It has been going on for longer than most people think. The key is to never say or advocate anything that could be used against you in a court of law and always assume someone is watching every key stroke and listening to every word.

You need to be boring to them. Those of you who have mentioned hiding their vehicles or disguising them are just asking to become the centre of attention.

By the way DHS, my Land Rover has leaf springs under it and came from the factory with leaf springs under it. It is 54 years old and I have owned it for 37 of those years. I have never owned a coiler.

I wasn't going to post anymore after being associated with Gestapo tactics

Alan, your attitude is the reason the gestapo was so successful in WWII. They didn't need to be everywhere, they just needed the civilians to turn each other in. You can have your crazy opinions, but please keep them in France.

This superviser's probably as shit scared of all this as you are. Think about that.

However, Will, there is one issue in the VIN decoder that you posted that needs clarifying.

There is a grey area concerning the letter confirming the model year.

There is no hard and fast rule concerning the letter 'A' on (Def) 90 / 110's.

The letter 'A' can start in 1983 (the first Def appeared in March 1983) and continue until 1987 (one year into the TD).

So, any truck between 1983 and 1987 with an 'A' year in the VIN is OK.

For the letters 'C' and 'D', I've not come across any. The letter 'B', yes.

I'm interested in the 'new body change' not being an issue. This is contrary to what I was told last year.

Keep up the good work.

Alan.

No heritage docs give production numbers. They only state what the vehicle was supplied as from the factory, body, engine style and lists type of gearbox and axles sometimes especially if a optional fitment.used to give key numbers.if known gives dealer supplied to address.it quite nice to have anyways. Steve.

It's well known here and has been offered for at least a decade if not longer. It's far from being a new service. It's also been well publicized in classic car and enthusiast magazines including those dedicated to Land Rovers.

Freakin told you!

Please remember this is my opinion...I'm not asking to have my head kicked in over this...

I'm surprised everyone is so surprised at all of this surveillance and monitoring and the like. If you think this is bad you'd slit your wrists if you knew what can really go on. A flight attendant can have someone arrested just like YOU can arrest someone...Agency's monitor all calls, wires, internet traffic etc...with the technology available...seriously, think about it. One time I was meeting a defender friend for the first time at his house so I Googled his addy...you know how I knew it was the right place? I saw the oil drips on his driveway from the Google map.

I'm not saying I agree or it's correct and proper behavior or that discussing it is wrong...this is all a good thing. People have to get angry for change. This have been going on longer than all of us...Hell even hand prints on cave walls is societal monitoring....
