Accelerated Services 720.200.3100, ask for Brandon or Tom (http://www.autotrans1.com/). They've shipped 3 cars for me. A friend up at Land Rover Flatirons turned me on to them years ago and I've been very pleased.

I will post my recommended shipper (Roadrunner Towing) a little later this morning when I get their info at work...I've used them several times and they are priced right and take the delivery personally. One word of caution...always get insurance on your truck prior to pick up. Trust me. If something goes wrong, only your insurance company will have the clout to squeeze money out of somebody for your damages. The "insurance" that is claimed to be included by most shipping companies is virtually non existent. Most transport companies are brokers who hire independant truckers to pick up/deliver your vehicle. I had a G Wagen delivered with a destroyed drive line and thereupon discovered the "not our problem" nature of shipping insurance. But if you have your insurance company involved, they've got the lawyers, the motivation and the connections with the driver's insurance company to make someone pay. A word to the wise.

Hey guys hate to bring a thread back from the dead... but would DAS and Athena still be the best two choices two years on?

I am being pessimistic about the Tdi making it much further, I am waiting for a conrod to come out the bottom or something... and just getting my ducks in a row if I have to send it home to San Diego.

My experience with Athena was back in 2008. If she is still in business, I would contact her again first...

Hope it doesn't come to that.

What I have learned from shipping quite a few vehicles is that there is a distinction between shipping brokers and those who actually have their own carriers. Sometimes it doesn't matter, sometimes it does. I guess it all depends on flexibility with timing and cost. If you do some research you will see that there are carriers who specialize in certain regions and certain types of vehicles. The problem that you can run into with brokers is that the agent you get may not be good or experienced. Also after the deal is done they may be very lax with communication which can be a real problem when it comes to an exact pick-up or delivery date. All in all, I have had pretty good luck and I think most will deliver since it's in their interest to get the vehicle shipped quickly and without damage. Just check to see exactly what they are responsible for and watch out for someone looking for too much money up front and no lock in date for pick up/delivery.

I have used Athena several times as well. My issue with transporters isn't damage its reliability- ie pick the damn car up the day you say you are going to not a week later. Auto shipping has changed a lot over the last couple of years with pretty much everyone now working "through" CentralDispatch.com.

use Barnes.. The guy is reliable and an owner operator. When he says your truck will be there it will be there.

Found an SD rack for one of my Discos and I'm considering buying it. Problem is, it's not local. I've read all the stories about the damage these things get from shipping un-crated. Anyone know of a good company that will crate and ship the thing to me?

Try Forward Air. I think their large alumunum crate will work. I use them to ship motorcycles and parts.

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll have to give them a call and see what they've got.

Just had a crappy experience with a company. I wont give there name here because Im not sure what the problem was and they were very apologetic but after telling me it would be a max 14 days from paying them(in full) I waited 10 days and the truck was not even picked up. No calls, nor correspondence of any form. I called Fisher Shipping, Jennifer 508-792-2427 ext 109, and the truck is being picked up three days later with no request for any money, $1500 from coast to coast COD with great customer service. Its a couple hundred more but I feel, in this case, you get what you pay for. I guess the lesson here is if they ask for full payment up front its thanks but no thanks
