HELP--1987 110 shows up as 2011 @ DMV

Hello all,

I just bought a 1987 LHD Defender 110 but when I tried to register it at the DMV (in Florida) it comes up as a 2011 in their system. Truck was apparently imported in 2011 and currently titled in Texas (as a 2011) but this doesn't make sense. The real kicker here is taxes as I don't want to pay Fl sales tax on a 2011 instead of a 1987 plus I don't want this hassle when I sell it in the future.

Both the progressive insurance person and the VIN decoder below said it was a 2011 but this is clearly a mistake.

Any thoughts?

I'm sure there has to be an explanation for this somewhere.

Thanks in advance.

I have this issue regularly with DMV here in NC. LR recycles their VINS is one issue, and they use a different system on ROW vs NAS vehicles. I have had to sign a form stating the VIN does indeed match the claimed vehicle description, aka the '87 in this case. And/or, they insist on the DMV agent inspecting the vehicle, which often results in educating said inspector. Either way, I end up with title- then comes the insurance company. Luckily, they default to DMV findings- in other words, once the title is issued, they have no problem.

Good luck, hope this is of some help.

Hmmmm.. Ok so I have to get a DMV agent to actually walk outside, look at a vehicle and use good judgement.

There must be some other way....hahaha.

I'm just confused why the vehicle was titled as a 2011 in TX. What did the seller say? What does FL want to tax you for a year (2011) that technically shouldn't exist? And are they taxing you per Defender or Range Rover prices???

Looks like the guy sells a few Land Rovers a year, so I'm still wondering why he'd have it titled as a 2011 as you say. What's the guys name? The only guy from Katy with more than a couple rovers that I can think of is Fraser61 here.

Yeah the 2011 Tx title is goofed up. The previous owner just said "it was imported in 2011" and explained it that way. I should have walked when the title didn't match but it's my fault for not inspecting closely enough.

As for 2011 taxes...actually we didn't get that far and got hung up on the 1987/2011 issue, but I suspect that if I didn't question it they would have let me register it incorrectly (again).

Can someone post the link to that calculator again, maybe I can go in armed with the proper decoder and they'll use some sense.

Also, is there somewhere on the vehicle where the year is stamped?

You can always just pay the Heritage to send you the e-mail certification - I think it's like $10?

I recently walked away from a 1987 110 titled as a 2011 in AZ.

Do you have emissions in FL?

We had the same issue with our 57 series1 it was imported in 1966 and that was the build date on the title in three states till we got it.

We got hold of the vichicle enforcement dept of the police dept, and had it inspected, they gave us a form which we took to the DMV and got it changed.

The kicker on ours was not only was the date of manufactor wrong but so was one number of the vin wrong in all that time from 1966 till 2015 and three onwers.

It was no problem in the end.

Good luck on your quest.

I would make an appointment with a manager at the DMV and give them the heads up that you have an older classic car that was registered with the improper year of manufacturer. Take pics with you. The VIN is stamped on the RH side of the front frame horn behind the bumper. Take pics of it as well. There is a VIN plate on the brake booster under the hood. Take pics of it too. With DMV and most other Government employees they get their egos hurt if you try to tell them what to do. Let them think they are leading and only suggest things if you feel they are headed in the wrong direction. They think everyone normal are condescending and like to play that game. Just beat the idiots by playing amazed with their intellect.

Dale is right. In NC we have a Vin Verification form and an inspector comes out to verify things. I always am the one telling them where things are and more about the identifying factors then they are generally knowledgeable about. But bottom line is that document generally seals the deal and clears up any issues. I would talk to your DMV is see if there is a comparable document they use or how do they go about verifying imported vehicles. You're not the only one in that state that has ever dealt with this issue I'd imagine so the DMV must have a process they tend to for this situation.

Then again....it is DMV so nothing is standard or easy.

Good luck.

Here is a good example of how screwed up Land Rover's VIN system is.
