Hella 4000 Position Lamps

Bought used Hella 4000 Rallye Halogens with Hella wiring harness.
The main bulb is a 100W halogen. There is a socket at bottom of housing for a POSITION BULB (H83220021) that is 5W and says only comes with the 031 series (Position lamp).

I think this acts as a parking lamp? Can someone verify?
IF it is a PARKING light how does it come on at first position to turn on parking lights?
The Hella 4000 wiring harness (148541001) light switch is only on/off position, no parking light position.

I have a set of the same ones. There is a wire on the harness that cuts into the parking lamps, so regardless of the Hella's on/off switch, when your main switched lights are illuminated (parking) the position turns on with the parking lights.

Yup. In some small European towns, where the narrow streets were laid out prior to the invention of the automobile, street lights have been strategically positioned and tuned so as to not pollute the night with light into narrow street bedroom windows. Therefor, headlamps cannot be used in town, as the street lamps should provide enough light to navigate. Hence the city light/position light was invented by Hella. Enough light so that pedestrians can see you coming, yet not enough to wash a window. It's not to position the headlight (as I once thought) but to mark YOUR position ;-)

Yank the bulb and run a bright led in it's place with reckless abandon. Makes a great DRL and won't strain the parking light circuit.

Now that is a history lesson, thanks D90Overkill. Are you running LED on your Hella Position?
IF so, have a pic?
5W incadescent should not strain the parking light circuit..already changing out the parking lights for LEDs anyways.

When I get back to the truck, I'll take a pic. These are on my P38 right now. Good thing, as my 90 is back in Portland. You'll be in fine shape running leds in the parking lights and trading the load for the positions. On a defender, I'm sure the circuit is robust enough to carry an extra 10 watts(2x5w) but I always prefer to stay at or under spec for the circuit loads.

Sorry about the backstory. Haha. Didn't mean to preach! ;-) I actually just think it's a funny circumstance that brought about the creation of that little light. Having it be illegal to use your headlights at night just makes me laugh. Makes sense in a perfect world, but it always amazes me how many people still think we actually live in a perfect world.

The above pics are. "Angel Eyes." The "Angel" halo is the ring of gas or led sourced light around the perimeter of the lens. It serves the same function as the position light on yours. I used them as DRL's, but it required me having the Nav lights on too. They are called "Celis rings" by Hella.

Those aren't the lights that I was referring to earlier. Just an old pic. Those Celis hella 4000 are the compacts, and are LED by design (55w & 2w led/ea). I wanted to go bigger and got a set of the ones you have. The full size 222cm (9") lights. I have yet to get a pic of the new units with the position led.

I will hold onto these 4000 Rallye Halogens until I can "afford" or want the Rallye 4000 LED.

They're great lights! I prefer the halogens myself. I just like swapping and using the led bulbs for the parts that are on all the time (i.e. Position/Celis) As they last forever and use no juice ;-) I'll buy your full size 4000 if you ever upgrade to the full led version.
