Heading to Africa

I'm off to Botswana Tuesday for a month long military exercise with the Botswana Defense Force. First time I ever saw the words Land Rover in a mitary briefing! We'll be in the middle of the Kalahari and at a base in Theb, so won't be able to post pics until near the end of August, but I hear this is going to be a major Land Rover sighting event!

We might have a Layover in the Azores, so potential sightings there too. Anybody been to the Azores? Things to see?

Stay tuned!

Sounds interesting!

I was disappointed my first trip to RSA; saw more Land Rovers in the movie "Safe House" than I have traveling over there. I did come across a cool Series bone yard but that was it.

Haven't been to Botswana but most of the safari operators I've met from there run Toyotas. But I'm sure in a month you'll sight a few!

Good luck and stay safe

How does one get an assignment to Botswana? My travel agent only sends me to Iraq and Afghanistan. Is a long tab required for a gig like that?

Great time of year for Africa; as noted temps will be a relief. I've only been May/June/July so never experienced Africa hot, but 100F+ and 95% humidity does not sound fun.

While you're there just go AWOL and rent a Defender; stories will be better I'm sure:

Have fun... I was tasked to assess & develop the driving skills of 30 members of the kenya army for NATO deployment, it was June in the Brecon Beacons in wales, I was in a shirt with sunscreen they were in wool knit hats and body warmers.

Of the 30 only 5 could drive to a recognized standard & fewer could follow instructions it was like a scene from the gods must be crazy
It was the most stressful week I have ever had, compounded by being told everyone had to pass.!

have fun it's a wonderful country, I envy your trip i'd love to get away from Olympics.
pack a tube of hydrocortisone cream and keep it in the fridge.

Regards all

Gren

Botswana is amazing!
That's where I realized I had an early onset rever addiction.
We hunted out of a defender for a lot of miles!
Enjoy winter there!

Bostwana has some of the best safaris and most expensive unfortunately.... you'll see plenty of rovers but as mentioned most outfitters have or are switching to Land Cruisers....

I went in August and it was nice. It is winter there. Slept in a tree house that only had walls about 3 feet high.

My wife and I were in Botswana this May on a 3 week self drive safari to Chobe National Park, Moremi Game Reserve, Tsodilo Hills World Heritage Site, Central Kalahari Game Reserve and Nxai Pan National Park. Although most of the lodges are using Toyotas it seem that the locals are still using Land Rovers. I did see a couple of broken down Toyotas loaded with some very unhappy tourists. I saw a lot of defenders in Maun including a couple of forward controls. It was about a 50-50 split between Defenders and Toyota bakkies for the people on self drives. We did see one Military 110 with gun mounts with a helmeted/ goggled driver come barreling through Nxai Pan.

I'm on layover at the Ascension Island, which is British Commonwealth I believe and a shared airbase between US and British Air Force. For a single 34 mile island in the middle of the Atlantic, I have to say I never thought I would get so tired of seeing Defenders that I would stop taking pictures. I'm thinking one in 5-7 vehicles is a Defender! Here's just a few (and a little SIII love). We fly to Africa tonight...

We're heading on a recon mission tomorrow for a 3.5 hour drive into the Kalahari up North to test long range radios for an upcoming joint training exercise. We're taking the 130, a BDF 110 and a HMMWV. I'm driving the 130. This should be an interesting drive!
